alih
my 23-week-old is in fine fettle but her comb is still small and pale, like a baby's. I am not worries about her particularly - she has a big crop which sometimes gets a bit full but she is laying and very perky. Am just curious as to whether it IS in fact a sign of malnutrition or something else or whether there are chooks who just stay that way? Chickvic
All of my girls look little in the comb department. They are all laying regularly but when they started their combs were still pink and small When I look at other peoples chicken pics, their combs seem huge compared to my girls. Perhaps I have dainty hens
stoice
I'd heard that size of comb can affect the pecking order (ie: small comb, bottom of order, large comb - top) Not so sure it's true though. Gladys has always had a relatively small comb (Not quite baby sized but def smaller than the other battery girls combs I'd seen) anyway she has quite a mean streak towards the rest of the girls and is definately top chook. My 22wk girls differ in comb size though, one is getting large the other is very small, maybe just a late developer in the comb dept. alih
thanks guys that's reassuring - as my children so charitably say, she is just a "mutant chicken"!

superjules
Our Yoda has a small comb, for a legbar-based hybrid it's miniscule! You could have knocked me down with a feather the day she laid her first egg, she was so remedial in the headgear department. They all have their individual looks!! Rhapsody
Bizmillah is a huge fat chook with a little pinhead with a tiny comb on top (she looks like a cushion with eyes). She lays bantam-size eggs and has a deformed crop which will block given any vegetable matter. She's a right character though!
Paola
Lorraine had a small pale comb when we first got her. some 4 months on its now grown quite big and is bright red. Another chook called Lorraine, you do not get may of those

She has quite yellow legs too! She's definitely the cheekiest chook and at the top of the pecking order unlike her more extravagantly headgeared sisters! Dinkychick
jomaxsmith i have 3 chucks the same colours as yours Anyways ive been looking for a thread about combs all night! Finally... Strut my littlest has a baby comb stil and tiny wattlesl...the other 2 have what i would call a grown up comb big un bright pink...Pecky GG's is the biggest and she has great big wattles to match...my dad still recons she is a rooster! But yeah 'Strut' who is meant to be the same age as the other two, is the same size almost but still hasn't put energy into her comb growing, its also very pale at the back and the front is black... born to be different that one! She has two tone legs to match... hard to know if this is normal as we dont know what type of chuck she is! Someone in the forum suggested she may be a Black rock... do they grow their combs late? need sleep...sorry for the rambling people.
josephine77
Agnes my Gingernut still has a small-ish comb and she's laying now - thankfully there are no mirrors in the eglu so she won't get an inferiority complex.
