Cinnamon
I picked up my new hens yesterday - Willow a young Welsummer,an as yet unamed gorgeous Columbine & a White Star who is named Sweet Pea. It would seem that Sweet Pea,who we noticed was pretty fiesty upon collection, will turn out to be to most inappropritely named chicken ever She is an utter minx, chasing the others back into the Eglu at the first opportunity, glaring at them when they dare to set foot outside it again & generally being a little madam. She is in lay,so at least the others get some respite from her vileness once a day,& they all went to be together well last night Photos to follow. I need name suggestions for the Columbine too - we have a natural gardeny theme going on......
Christian
At least the others get some peace when she is laying! How about Peony, Dahlia, or Jasmine?? Can't think this morning! edit - Oooh, Dandelion!
Cinnamon
Now,I like Dandelion - especially with the little fluffy wig she is currently growing Each time I see Sweet Pea have a go at the others,I just think, well, when you go in with the big girls, your time will come
quickcluck
how about daisy or Foxy (foxglove)
WitchHazel
Sarah, I'm really pleased to hear that you have your new girls - hope you'll be posting pictures soon I read that Sweet Pea is laying already, and I'm guessing that the as-yet-unnamed Columbine is point of lay, but how old is Willow? Have you thought of calling the Columbine "Columbine"? It might fit with your cottage They are gorgeous self-seeing flowers so would fit your natural garden theme. My garden is full of them in late spring. The proper name for them is Aquilegia
Cinnamon
I read that Sweet Pea is laying already, and I'm guessing that the as-yet-unnamed Columbine is point of lay, but how old is Willow? Stupidly I forgot to ask But I have emailed her,so will get to know soon.I am guessing around 18-20 weeks? The Columbine is now 80% certainly going to be Dandelion
WitchHazel
Stupidly I forgot to ask But I have emailed her,so will get to know soon.I am guessing around 18-20 weeks? If it's any help, my Welsummer (Jasmine) was 17 weeks old yesterday. I would guess they came from the same hatch?
Cinnamon
Yes,I would guess so. Do you have any photos of her Hazel,so I can compare? My Willow is so pretty- just the most gorgeous colouring edit - just seen your blog, & yes, they look very similar
Olly
I was going to say exactly the same thing about Columbine - it's a garden flower anyway! Or if she's as naught as you say, maybe Bindweed or Belladonna would be better!
Egluntyne
The name Columbine in itself is rather pretty, and is a plant name too. Might seem a bit unimaginative though.
WitchHazel
Do you have any photos of her Hazel,so I can compare? My Willow is so pretty- just the most gorgeous colouring This photo doesn't do any justice to the sheen on her colouring, but you can see how her combe and wattles are developing. Cinnamon
Here are a couple of very bad photos of very nervy ,very damp hens I will try to get some better ones once they have dried out a bit & don't scuttle off into the Eglu as soon as I appear The 2 brown ones are both about 17 weeks,so a fair bit younger than Sweet Pea who is around 24. They have very little wattle as yet,& both have that 'teenage gawky' thing going on,but I am certain they will develop into very pretty hens when they are older. Hazel,my Willow is a deeper red than your Jasmine by the looks of it,but she is very soggy in these photos Dandelion the Columbine & Willow the Welsummer Sweet Pea the White Star & Willow

Cinnamon
Its all settled down a bit now. Sweet Pea is very much the big boss lady - it will be interesting when I come to mix this lot in with my current flock I think

Ain't Nobody Here
Congratulations on your new girls, Sarah . They're very sweet . Hope your Columbine (Dandelion?) lays lovely green eggs like my Maisie .
MedusA
The botanical name for Columbine is "Aquilegia". It's a bit of a mouthful though. Dandelion may be more appropriate.
WitchHazel
Isn't Sweetpea gorgeous! Willow looks lovely...my Jasmine has yellow Big-Bird type legs, does Willow?
Cinnamon
Isn't Sweetpea gorgeous! Willow looks lovely...my Jasmine has yellow Big-Bird type legs, does Willow? Not yet - hers are still baby white Bit concerned about Willow the Welsummer actually. When we collected her she was dozing in the pen & she hasn't really snapped out of the dozyness yet.Shes just standing a lot, eyes half shut, tail down The journey may have unsettled her,but I have emailed the breeder as her lethargic state is so very different from the other 2 who are bumbling around sctratching & doing chickeny things.... I will see what tomorrow brings.
