Angels4
I just ordered a 90gallon composter from my local Superstore and I was wondering if you all thought that would be a good size to get started with? Ain't Nobody Here
I've got 2 compost bins which are about 220 litres each - they're both getting pretty full already (don't know how that works compared to gallons, I'll let you do the calculations!) Angels4
220litres = 58.12gallons so 90gallons should work to start. Thanks
Olly
I bought my third composter this year, I reckon that size is a good start! Depends how much other waste you have - mine is probably 60% grass clippings, 20% chicken-poo and aubiose, and 20% garden/vegetable waste. I started digging out the first composter earlier this year, lovely stuff!
Angels4
Next year I will start my garden, we just moved and with repairs, the girls, and work, a garden had to wait. It' will just be chicken poop, straw, and kitchen waste to begin with. If I start now, do you think I might have some valuable compost by this spring when I start my garden? Angels4
Finally recieved my composter. I've read through the directions and it says I shouldn't put any dog, cat or pet waste in. I wasn't planning on dog and cat waste, but I was planning on straw and chicken waste with kitchen s"Ooops, word censored!"s. Will it be ok? Egluntyne
I would say so. Chicken poo is a great compost activator.
Snowy
You should definitely have good compost by next spring!
chickenanne
Chicken poo is fine, so long as you give it enough time to rot down. You don't want to put in cooked veg or meat as this will attract mice and rats. Also, I think you might need to add some more green stuff than you were planning - the woody things (straw etc) might be too much carbon to rot quickly if you don't mix in enough green (nitrogenous) waste. Grass cuttings mixed in? I think you need to aim for (very roiughly) half-carbon-half-nitrogen waste.
