Cooks
only just caught up with this, so sorry to read your sad news, I instantly thought theft too I am afraid with an attempt to make it look like a predator. I am glad you have reported it to the police.
bokbokbok
I didn't comment yesterday as I thought there would be some news by today - What a horrible thing to happen - whatever the cause
kimbo_frog
Still no sign of the girls... Feels strange not having the full flock today... My little girl switched the tv on last nite as she wasnt settlling in bed... And it was "Chicken Run!"... She asked if thats what our chickens did?...so I said yes...bless her! Kids have started on the quest to sell stuff to buy a cube and CCTV... They went through all their old console games and dvds as it was raining... my son looked on a trade-in shop site and was pleased to announce that we would get nearly £200 for them all!... I think they are all really determind to get some more ex-batts in the Sept rescue...so my mind has already made up for me!... Seen a few other losses on the forum today and its all so sad... fingers crossed the forum will soon be filled with good news for a long time.... theherd123
Hi Kim, Only just caught up with this thread - how terrible for all the family and such a mystery too. I like the positive way you are all dealing with your loss and hope you have enough money to get the cube & electric fencing soon.
beach chick
just caught up with this, and am so sorry for you all and your little girl in particular - hope you are all feeling a bit better now. just a thought if it was fox: we lost one of ours while she was freeranging at 10am on a sunday (clearly foxes dont go to church) - no feathers, no blood, no nothing. apart from a neighbour hearing some squawking, it was as if she had disappeared into the ether. probably better if it was a fox than theft really, at least you can feel that a fox needs to eat while yobbos are just yobbos... Jen&Rog
Hello, I'm so sorry to read about this. It sounds very strange and I really hope you get to the bottom of what happened because you can at least try to prevent anything like this again. I really feel for you because I had my first 2 Omlet hens stolen nearly 2 years ago along with their eglu by a deranged/jealous/mad ex-neighbour.. I still wake up in the night listening for noises worrying that someone is trying to get into the garden. BUT thankfully nothing has happened since then and I've rehomed 6 ex-batts who wouldn't have had the chance to free-range with us. But what a shock to lose 5 in one go. Sending you lots of hugs and best wishes xx

Gosh! What a story! It must have been awful. Did you get them back?
Barkisland
Hello. Sorry to read about the mysterious disappearance of your chooks. The very same thing happened to my boss last weekend. Hers were not ex batts, but exactly the same scenario otherwise. She went out to lock them up on Sunday evening and all 5 had disappeared, completely without trace. She lives in a very isolated rural spot, so it would be so unlikely to be an opportunist thief, so all we can think of is a fox, maybe one feeding cubs? Most upsetting, whatever the cause. kimbo_frog
Its not a nice thing to experience... I love my girls to have the freedom of the garden but it seems foxes etc are getting more brazen and hunting in the daytime too... Looks like they will be locked up unless we are out there now... Still no sign here of the lost girls... Hoping to get some more ex-batts in September... My son has been really busy in the garden, trying to make everything more secure for the next batch... So hopefully we wont have to go through this again Kim
Stevie
CCTV is a good idea and also stick some signs up warning potential thieves its active too.To help prevent anyone from climbing over your fences try nailing cheap carpet grippers to the tops or possibly adding trellis to give additional height as preventing access should be top priority. Quite heartwarming that your children are doing all they can to protect them.Kids nowadays often get such a battering in the media so this is refreshing!
