cube glug - they can't use it!

Recommended Posts

It took mine about a day to work it out- I withdrew all other sources of water so that they just had to learn how to use it.

I held each chook near the glug & tapped the nipple so that water came out of it, & that's how they learned- they had to, I was going away for that weekend & my water bowl didn't hold much water!

If the hens have no other water sourse then they should quickly learn how to use it.

Tap the "teats" of the glug with a stick to make water drip from it, they should become curious at you doing so and whilst investigating they will learn how to get water for themselves. (I can't take credit for this, my 11 year old daughter developed this "method"!)

I had the same problem, and did the same thing - poked it with a stick to make it drip. Keep at it, they do learn but if you put an 'easier' source of water in, then they will drink that first.

I still put a bowl of water in when it's very hot, to make sure they are getting enough.

Mine took a day. I was very hard hearted and made sure it was the only source of water (if other water is available, why would they bother to try?)

I also used the knocking-the-nipples technique, but used my fingers (didn't think of using a stick).

As soon as one of them got the hang of it, the others all copied.

Mine used it straight away, I called them over with the 'treat noise' they all come scarpering and I just tapped one of the nipples, Opal did it straight away and the other 2 copied. They have also sussed that if they hold it with the bottom of their beak they can get a good glug of water  Clever chooks!

Well Chickvic's chooks were obviously at the front of the queue for brains, while my lot were too busy off looking for food

My little monsters never got on with the superglug, so I gave up and gave them 2 tradition bell drinkers instead. I then sold their superglug and the grub (they kept throwing all the pellets out) without telling them and gave the money to the BHWT - what a bad hen-mummy I am :D

Have they worked it out yet?

i'm sure that my hens would prefer to drink from a bowl, and sometimes i fill their treat bowl with water for an "easy" drink, but i much prefer them using the superglug- the water doesn't get at all dirty now I have the Cinnamon designed cover over it!

Mine must have been left behind when the brains were dished out! 'Cos they haven't worked it out, Perhaps if it was hot they would. I've put the glugs lower so they can drink from the top now. Will have to try again starting tomorrow. What's the cover you are talking about? Intrigued!
