beach chick
anyone know the answer to this? mid June we got Sugar, a white leghorn and Meringue, a copper black maran, both supposed to be point of lay. Sugar has been laying very consistently - every day I think, bless her heart - since the end of June or thereabouts. Meringue, on the other hand, seems very immature - comb still very small, although bright red, and very flighty - I saw her jump 6' in the air the other day, just for fun!! she looks about as mature (in terms of comb etc) as Crunchie, our light sussex, who is only about 15 weeks old. she's about the same size as Sugar, but much smaller than Crunchie. are marans slower to mature than other birds? she's lovely, very beautiful (tho slightly evil looking), and her tail has just started to come up, so maybe she's getting there? just cant wait for the alleged chocolate brown eggs to add to Sugar's white ones and Paris and Chardonnay's beige ones!! would like to hear anyone else's comments on marans. Janty
Is your copper black maran a hybrid? I have copper blacks and they are maran based hybrids and are not slow to mature. In fact when I first got my girls nearly a year ago, it was the copper black who laid first. It could be that she was a bit younger than the others. Point of lay covers a number of weeks. We have just bought four more hens at point of lay including two more copper blacks and there is quite a difference between them. Mum-in-law bought five from the same breeder and one of hers is crouching already. Jan
beach chick
thanks for that, tbh I dont know if she is a hybrid or not!! but def a copper black maran. I'm sure she'll do it in her own sweet time, I shall just have to be patient... sigh.

Guest
I'm pleased to see this thread! I have a Maran Cuirvrée, who is a hybrid. She started laying at 19 weeks and is now about 23 weeks. But she is tiny and very light. She still looks like a baby. I was expecting a big bird like our beautiful Miss Pepperpot. Echo's little eggs weigh about 35g and are a gorgeous dark brown colour.
