Lindy Loo
We have a grape vine loaded with grapes and OH thought he'd give wine making a bit of a try. He got all the gear from the local home brew shop and came home early tonight to pick said grapes. The instructions said to press the grapes to extract the juice so we got out my trusty apple press and there the fun started. There is not a lot of juice being extracted, lots of it is being squirted all around the kitchen and he had even managed to get some on the kitchen ceiling. Does anyone have any idea what we are doing wrong? What is the best way to juice the grapes? Any advice welcome!
Lesley
Perhaps put them into a food processor in batches and then put the pulp into the press? Maybe it's the whole grapes bursting that's causing all the mess? I would think that is why people used to tread grapes first, before putting them into a press? Lindy Loo
Yes, I think you are right! I have spent a wee while this morning s"Ooops, word censored!"ing bits of grape off all the kitchen surfaces.
Lewis
Lesley is probably right or you could chop them in half so that they don't pop, they will just squash
Snowy
I wonder why you need to extract the juice I've never made wine with grapes, but have tried with most other things and have never needed to extract the juice first! Have you looked at other recipes? You might find a better one if you scout around! I would have thought just cutting them in half would be fine for making the first stage 'must'.
