Have you ever seen a carrot fly?

Recommended Posts

Well there were a few flying across the kitchen into the bin this morning :(

I lifted a 6m row of carrots from the plot yesterday and was pleasantly suprised that they hadn't been completely destroyed by carrot root fly.

There was what some slight damage but nowhere near as bad as the ones I planted in the raised bed at home (which is higher than these blighters can fly if you believe the gardening books!).

It is so annoying to have to fillet carrots :evil: Oh well we still managed to salvage 3 or 4 lbs for the freezer, and I now have a rather stylish orange palm :lol::lol:

Its war next season! Enviromesh cages all round me thinks. Same goes for the brassicas I don't want another bumper caterpillar harvest :lol:

So theres another two of Gods' creatures i officially don't much like.

The joys of gardening in ignorance :lol:

...No, but I have seen a cauliflower canoeing.

Try interplanting carrots with onions next year Kev. The smell of the onions masks the carrot smell, so the flies don't find them :idea:

It has worked for me for 2 years running.

The best thing is fleece or enviromesh. Can be a bit pricey if you have very long rows.

At least you got some decent carrots eventually. Plus, people will think you have been applying fake tan! :wink::lol::lol:

Very good Christian :lol::lol:

We used the interplanting with onions method for quite a few years, it also helps to sow the carrots late after the first flush of carrot flies is over. We now plant them in a block under Enviromesh. We leave our carrots in the ground for most of the winter then freeze the last few just before they start to regrow in Jan/Feb time.
