Chickens in the house!

Recommended Posts

Before the novelty of having chickens wore off, ES would bring one (or two or three  ) into the house regularly. We were lucky to only have "presents" left on an old sheet or the kitchen floor.

They don't really come in any more!

Ours quite often try to sneak in when they think you aren't looking. I think they associate the back door with getting treats as that is where we normally come from when we give them meal worms or sweetcorn which seem be their favorite.

We have not started shutting the door on them after Jerry sneaked in twice and pooped on the door mat ( a curry poo) which took ages to clean up. The second time she hadn't quite made it in when iIfound her and she pooped in the double glazing unit around the door.

On a different note, we have some builders in laying a new drive and patio, so the chickens are not free to roam around the garden as much as usual and are spending more time in the run. The girls are doing are very good job of making me feel guilty but i think it is for they own good or they may end up with a pick axe in the head! Will the chickens be ok spending more time in the run if they are used to being out for about 5hrs aday which is now cut down to 2hrs.

Sorry if i'm rambling on

My back door is always open & they all love to perch on the door step surveying the garden from there. Yesterday I did find a curry poo right in front of the fridge :vom: ewww. Wasn't impressed. As they're all Pekin Bantams their feathery feet do tend to enable them to stealth much easier I think!

Mine try to get in but we put the clothes airer on it's side with a towel over, providing you put it at an angle with a bucket behind they cant seem to get over or through

It amazes me that we all pay loads of money to have 'designer' hen houses then turn our gardens into Steptoe's year with all manner of chicken proofing and waterproofing! I keep mine out of the house with a fold out sunlounger on its side!!

I think I must have members of the chicken SAS. Mine have broken cat flaps, scaled airers, jumped baby gates, charged fire guards and were recently observed standing behind the dog waiting for him to open the door so they could follow him in.

the only thing that seems to have finally stopped them was the unfortunate demise of their leader on the last windy day when next door's fense pannel fell on her. They can't seem to manage it without her. And I know what they mean. I can't belive how much I'm missing that chicken!

I'm afraid that mine do come in generally as far as the cat food!

Agatha always makes a beeline for it and the others follow. As she was my tattiest ex-batt I'm afraid I indulge her and ignore her, muttering to myself that in a parallell world she would not now be here being such a bolshie little maverick. I get quite soppy thinking about her life since she was liberated!!!

I dont deliberately let any of mine in there just blooming

sneaky :) especially Fauna who is a persistant offender

and when you catch her and go to pick her up to take

back outside she stamps her feet & does her little tap

dance routine which always looks sooo cute how they get

round, through, over the eglu netting is a mystery to me :?:

I have almost broken my neck on it several times

once they discovered the cat food bowl that was it

its as though there on a mission :D so far we have

not had any little presents though

Hi

Our girls regularly try to come in the kitchen especially when we let the dog in and especially tonight when it was pouring with rain and they looked like punk chickens! We have a stable door that I leave the bottom half closed and . . . you've guessed it they jump up onto it from the plant pots  they've not quite braved jumping down the other side and into the kitchen. I just pick them up and put them back on the plant pot to go outside.

i admit i let my girls in the house from time to time. i had them as chicks and they grew up in the house, and it's fun to have them inside. Every now & then I have to do some clean up work, but that's fine. . usually they are pretty good when they are in. It doesn't happen often, but i do enjoy it. . .
