Eggstatic!
I have had my chickens for over a month now and all is well, just one concern though, Barbara, my gingernut has been sneezing a bit, could this be becuase she has been free ranging in the rain? I put apple cider vinegar in their water is there anything else i could add?
theherd123
Sorry to read she has the sneezes. You could try adding citracidal to the water too as this is good for sneezing chookies. Also you could add some health boosting products to her food for a few days esp is she is under the weather. Try poultry spice in the food or a poultry drink which again can be added to the water. I do hope she improves soon.
Eggstatic!
I have got some poultry spice so will put some of that in her food; she isnt poorly otherwise, so i dont think she is too bad and she is in and out of the eglu so i think she might be about to lay her first egg. Thank you for the advice.
chooklady
My Gingernut has the sneezes, she arrived with us on the 12th, I had to take her to the vet, she is currently on Baytril, by mouth and she had an injection at the vets. Hope yours improves quickly and you don't need the vet.
Hen Watch
Mine get sneezes from time to time. I use Citricidal Liquid in the water when they are sneezy. See Omlet shop or http://www.yournutritionshop.co.uk
Eggstatic!
She hasn't been sneezing as much over the past couple of days, i have been using the poultry spice but I will order some citricidal too, thanks.
ValR
My gingernut has been sneezing since she arrived, 10 days ago. She also had a broken beak. Omlet sent me some citracidal, which I've been using for about 5 days now, and I've been putting chicken spice with her feed for 3 or 4 days. If anything she's getting worse. The pepperpot has grown noticeably, she hasn't, Question - Omlet have offered to exchange her on Thursday, which is tempting. It would be good to start with a healthy chicken, but the pepperpot has got used to her, so have I, and it would be a shame to have to go through the 5-days confined to the run getting used to the eglu again. What should I do?
chooklady
There have been a few people with with slightly poorly Gingernuts. My Pepperpot is lovely now, her feathers are gorgeous and I think she will lay in the next few days. Poor old ginger is skinny and generally not very robust looking and I think it will be a while before we get any eggs, just as well as she's on antibiotics. But she is a lovely hen, very cheeky and she's got used to coming in the kitchen for medicine, although she hates the stuff.
Eggstatic!
After getting advice from the forum I have been giving the girls some poultry spice, her sneezing has now cleared up, well i haven't seen or heard her anyway! chooklady
I think I must track some down tomorrow, mine is certainly brighter now and not sneezing so often, but she is still very slight compared to the others.
ValR
Mine has had poultry spice for about 3 - 3 days now, and citracidal for getting on for a week. The sneezes seem as bad, and she too is very slight, but she seems quite perky. Perhaps it's a Gingernut thing.
chooklady
I am still giving mine the Baytril from the vet at the moment, I'm beginning to think I've got a chicken with hayfever!
ValR
Is it possible they may have a bit of pollen or a grass seed up their nose?
Chooks Aloud
As well as all the other things mentioned, when I have a sneezy/rattly chook I put a few drops of eucalyptus oil on some kitchen roll and put it underneath the bars in the eglu to help them breathe easier.
