thehallfamily
Hi Guys... My iron went kaput yesterday......on the last school shirt. I need to buy a new one, and am looking to you for advice. It needs to be steam, not to heavy and able to cope with about 5 hours of ironing a week. Any ideas...and offers of laundry ?? buffie
I use a polti with steam iron attachment but it's not that light. It does however cut down time spent ironing and the steam lasts for ages. BBx

Paola
My ironing lady uses one with a separate water reservoir. They are about £120 in Argos but you can get them new at half the price on ebay OH auntie uses one and will not go back to a normal iron. thehallfamily
Thanks for the help, I had never considered a separate steam system, but looks like it may be the way to go. Do these last well, because it is always the steam part of the iron that I wear out first? The Polti looks interesting, and as we sell Roomba - robotic vacuum cleaners - we might be able to get a discount?? Thanks again Angela
Cinnamon
I am probably not the best person to give advice here,as I don't own an iron.........but the Phillips Azur won the Good Houskeeping award recently
Guest
Interesting thread as my iron has just broken this morning! I have used Tefal for years and years. I always spend quite a bit (but I don't think OH would accept £120) as I find a 'professional' iron so much better than the cheaper ones. I am thinking about a cordless one this time and it will have to be in Argos so that OH can pick it up on his way home tonight!
clare*
I bought a steam generating one from Aldi a couple of months ago. Its really good. It's one that sits on the water tank. It gives you a sauna whilst you are ironing
Guest
I see cordless irons are no longer the 'in-thing!'. Argos is having a sale at the moment, so we've gone for another Tefal which would have cost £80 but is £20 off at the moment. Cinammon - why don't you have an iron? Guest
When I had the babies (that took 9 years!) OH did all the ironing! Now I really enjoy it as it is undemanding, I can watch TV/DVD and I can achieve something - a big pile of ironing is so rewarding!

Good point Ginette, how do you manage without an iron Cinnamon?
AnnieP
Mine does the ironing too. Well, they're his shirts when all's said and done!
thehallfamily
I know what you mean Ginette, I always say I hate ironing, but in reality I iron everthing bar socks, and find spending a few productive hours in front of the TV quite refreshing! I have to iron so everything is neat in the airing cupboard and drawers. How I envy you who can resist the urge to iron! I have to have matching pegs on the washing line too
Guest
I have to have matching pegs on the washing line too Yes I do that! And sometimes I make alternating patterns with the coloured pegs (red, blue, yellow, pink, white, red, blue . . .) Is that why it takes so long to peg out do you think? And I peg all the ironing stuff together and the non-ironing separately so that it's easier to get in! My mother chooses suitable colour pegs to go with the colour of the washing so that it all looks nice.
Mrs Frugal
I have wooden pegs but am afraid that I have to peg things out next to each other so they look nice! All the pink things together, followed by say white things, then blue things ! I'm a bit obsessive about how my washing gets pegged out ! Oh yes, and I never hang my superpants on the line. There wouldn't be room for much else would there !
thehallfamily
Ooh yes I used to do the same as your Mum, but it was taking tooo long. So now I have just silver and pearly white pegs, and it speeds things up! Mind you now I have to think about puting things into iron settings, to save time of course ha ha! Guest
Yes, I often wonder about sorting things according to who they belong to. That might save time. But I only have 4 sides on my whirly thing and there are 6 of us! Can't hang anything out today! It keeps raining! No radiators either and no tumble dryer! It's going to have to be the airer! Guest
Crumbs, I feel like a bit of a 'hanging tart' now - I just chuck them on with whatever peg comes to hand first, in whatever order they come out the basket..

kannie
I wouldn't recommend a cordless one. We found our cordless lost heat as you were using it, so it quickly became less effective (as you'd expect really). So unless you're a very slow ironer and are happy to return it to its base regularly, go for one with a cord. Our cordless base is now cluttering up the back of a cupboard somewhere & the cord is permanently plugged in!
