mostin
Sorry if this is a stupid question but do they all moult at the same time of year or different times? When should I keep an eye out for it?
Egluntyne
It depends how old they are. Generally they have a biggish moult as the approach their second winter.........if the were spring hatchings.
mostin
The people I adopted them from told be they were born this January, so it probably isn't that. It's just that Priscilla is looking a bit scruffy round the front and I wondered if she had started moulting, as after her run of softies she hasn't laid since. I've checked for red mite, and I asked your advice about de-lousing yesterday, which I will do this afternoon. I have started a course of flebenvet this morning. Lillian is laying fine, is there anything else I can check for? Do they start by just loosing a couple of feathers, or does it all happen quickly? I just wanted to cover all my bases being still new to this. And feel better once I have refered to the bible that is Egluntines head. hope you don't mind. The Dogmother
If they were hatched early in the year then they may well do a small moult this time of the year and will probably stop laying for a bit too. If they hatched in the summer, so roughly May onwards (what summer, eh?) then they will probably not moult at all the first winter and continue to lay too. nowaysaidlibby
hello, i have only had my chickens for 4 weeks and they haven't started laying yet. however at the moment they seem to be shedding a lot of feathers. is this usual considering their age? any help from 'eggsperienced' chicken owners would be appreciated!
