Couperwife
recently someone posted that they were going / have been on a cycling holiday...but I cant remember who so, has anyone been on a cycling holiday? I have been talking to Kev and we would like a "dont get bored sitting by the pool - get out and do something" sort of holiday. but we have questions: how fit do you need to be? do you need your own bikes (we have them - but are they good enough?) is it better to do the UK or abroad? hmmm, many more questions to come i think... thanks cathy x

Ain't Nobody Here
IT WAS ME . how fit do you need to be? OH and sons are extremely fit. I'm not as fit as I have been in the past but I managed fine. Although I was spared the "epic climb" after ES broke his collarbone so didn't get to test my fitness properly! I don't cycle much but do a step class once a week and try to keep up with my running (failed miserably this year though ). do you need your own bikes (we have them - but are they good enough?) We went to Italy and hired the bikes there. They were pretty good bikes. If you take your own, at least you know them and are used to them. We have taken our bikes to Ireland, the Outer Hebrides and Belgium on holiday before (staying in a holiday house and doing trips from the house rather than the organised type of holiday). I wouldn't say either is better, it just depends how practical it is to take your own bikes. is it better to do the UK or abroad? We've done both but the only organised holiday we've done was in Italy. I have to say it was fab - the hotels were lovely, the bikes were great, the organisation brilliant. No washing or cooking either which was a bonus! Only downside was ES's accident . We booked through Hooked on Cycling and it was all well organised but I don't know if I'd use them again. I would go straight to the company in the country concerned rather than pay Hooked on Cycling a lot of money to do not very much actually . Anything else you want to know just ask . Couperwife
wow, that was quick thank you me and kev arent very fit, but we are hoping that booking the holiday will push us in the right direction cathy x
bronze
I used to go youth hostelling with my dad. Problem is everyone drives now and theyre shutting loads so the gaps between are not realistic.
Ain't Nobody Here
This is who we booked through (using Hooked on Cycling but you could do it direct). The bloke who runs it couldn't have been kinder or more helpful when we had the accident and I wouldn't hesitate to recommend him . (Accidents are very rare, so don't let that put you off .) Mutrix Farmers
me and kev arent very fit, but we are hoping that booking the holiday will push us in the right direction There are no hills in The Netherlands!
Ain't Nobody Here
True . We did actually hire bikes in the Netherlands too a few years ago (just for a couple of days). It was very easy cycling although we got those weird bikes with no brakes - you have to pedal backwards to stop - took a bit of getting used to! Mutrix Farmers
I had one of those when I was 10. I nearly failed my cycling proficiency because I couldn't do an emergency stop quickly enough!!!!
