mostin
I think one of my girls may have scaley leg. If she does it is a very mild case and only just starting. I have spent the afternoon trawling my chicken books, this forum and t'internet and now I am very confused. What does everybody else use? There seem to be 100's of products, which ones are the best? Answers on a postcard please........ Seriously though, could some of you let me know what has worked for you as I am in a real muddle now. Thank you. Egluntyne
Ivermectin *Not licensed for use on poultry in UK. I use it in the form of Xeno 200 which you can get online. There is an egg withdrawal period.
mostin
Is it an internal treatment then or a spot on or something? thanks for answering so quickly egluntine, you are my chickens guardian angel
Egluntyne
It is a pump spray that you apply to the back of the neck. Normally about 5 sprays, repeated a week later.

emmaw298
I sprayed the legs with a cat flea spray from a petshop (something like johnsons, although not stated for chickens) and then dunked their legs in (sunflower!) oil to starve the mites of an airsupply. I only did this once and it successfully worked. Not had to do it again since. Did feel a bit like I was preparing them for the oven though when I was smothering their legs in oil
chelsea
vaseline on the legs is supposed to be good apparently.
abwsco
Dunk the legs in surgical spirit once a week for three weeks. Oh, and don't pick off any of the scales either.
Christian
Dunk the legs in surgical spirit once a week for three weeks. Oh, and don't pick off any of the scales either. Exactly, the scales will be replaced when the chicken moults.
Bondinho
I used Johnsons scaley leg mite stuff from Jolleys/Pets at home (£2.99 for small bottle), put about 5 drops on each leg and then smothered them in vaseline. Did it for 5 days about 2 weeks ago and it has cleared up, and some scales have already fallen off. Johnsons stuff was recommended on here too. bokbokbok
Ok - I have been waiting for this question to be asked - here is the solution my Chook Man gave me when I was buying our lot. He said it in all seriousness and I think he even did it to one of the girls as a demonstration. Please do not flame ME if he is a total nut case - I am just passing along what a guy with 25 years of experience with chooks does: WD 40! mostin
Well at least we always have some of that in the garage How long does it take until the scales go back to normal? Do you have to wait until the next big moult, which may be in a years time? Or do they slough off all the time like human skin cells do? Egluntyne
WD 40! I've just googled it and it is suggested on other forums. I wouldn't use it myself when there are simpler and safer alternatives around though.
