Walk in run

Recommended Posts

We are thinking of building a walk in run for our girls and i am after a bit of advice really.

1. I have looked on aviaries4u and flytesoffancy at their runs, does anyone have any experience with these companies or can you recommend anywhere else.

2. Would you recommend placeing the run on paving slabs with auboise or on grass with auboise?

3. I will be extending our group of girls too, at the moment I have an eglu, should I buy the cube or another eglu to compliment the one that i have already?

Thanks in advance.

we did our walk in run on earth with a brick & concrete surround and put the mesh panels on top of the brick. If I was re-doing our run I would definitely lay a slabbed/concrete base and floor and do away with the mud base as after all the rain we have had all summer the wet even managed to come up underneath the run floor!

So if you have a particularly boggy/prone to wet garden I would recommend a slabbed/hard base/floor

We initially had our 2 eglus like this -

We now have the cube in the walk in run but wish we had kept the 2 eglus as I find the cube very hard to manourvre in and out of our walk in run. Some cube owners put their cube on the outside of the run which gives them easier access and ease of movement/access to the trays. :D

I have the 15ft version of the Flytesofancy walk in run and we find it's very good. Flytesofancy were very friendly and easy to deal with and delivered on time. I would recommend them.

We've paved round the outside and have soil in the middle with hemcore on top. However, if I was doing it again I'd probably pave all the way over as the soil is now completely compacted. That said, the girls do like to sort of dust bath in it and the hemcore.

If you are going to put the run on grass I would recommend getting Flysofancy's fox guard skirt thing as well to deter digging round the outside.

We've also added a padlock and bolt to the door as it only came with rather flimsy catches and, given our recent and increasingly frequent visits from our foxy friend, we're very glad we reinforced security.

Initially we put the cube in the run but it proved enormously difficult to move and clean so we've now got it outside the run securely attached with part of the standard Omlet cube run. Witchhazel has a good picture of this set up in her signature and ours is very similar. This makes life easier than but like Chelsea I would rather have kept my 2 eglus in there on tables and not bothered with the cube.

Oh and do get a roof.

Hope this helps. Good luck with whatever you decide.

I am not a builder or very good with power tools. I looked into a place here in the States to build a walk in run like the wonderful ones you can get in the UK from flytesofancy (but it would cost close to $1000US). Luckily I saw this on line:

All I have to do is buy the wood already cut to size and it goes together like a puzzle. Instead of making it into a shed, I will attach weld mesh and Viola. A walk in run.

I have the 18' Flytesofancy walk in run, and I love it.

I found them very pleasant and helpful and they delivered when they said they would.

An old fashioned family firm.

I had to wait about 3 weeks as they make them to order as a rule.

Mine is on cobbles which I cover with Aubiose.

I've finally started to get down to business building our permanent walk-in run. One end framed by a shed, and the front shape is curved, so it's a wee bit of a challenge. Oh, and there are two bushes in there. Forming the frame this week to lay a concrete base at the weekend, then start measuring up and making the actual run.

Biggest DIY project I've undertaken to date!
