should I vaccinate my rabbit?

Recommended Posts

Yes Yes Yes - definately get your rabbit vaccinated for mexy.

I've got 2 mini lops, from different breeders. Teddy was vaccinated by his breeder, Priscilla wasn't by his, and we had to get him done when we got him. One week later he had sores come up on his nose, above his eye and his paw. It was atopic mexi, if he hadn't have had the jab in time he would have got full blown mexi and probably wouldn't have survived, as it is he will carry the scars forever. Teddy who had had the vaccination weeks earlier was absolutely fine.

Mexy is carried by gnats, mosquitos, even fleas that may be in the hay you buy, so you don't need to be near wild rabbits to catch it.

Don't mean to sound alarmist but what we went through just a couple of weeks ago is still very fresh in our minds and I would hate some one else to go through the same.

:)

yes yes yes - get them vaccinated. My mum's next door neighbour lost their rabbit to myxi, they don't live in a rural area and the bun hadn't had contact with any others. She too was told it was spread by flies.

I have always had my bunnies done, it was a condition when I rehomed them from a rescue. I have wondered in the past if it is worth it, but hearing about the neighbours bunny reinforced the importance of the jabs. I also find it a good opportunity to get a helth check, the vet checks their teeth etc as well so any problems can hopefully be nipped in the bud.

Yes do get your bunnys vacinated against Myxomatosis and Viral Haemorrhagic Disease (VHD), just in the same way you'd have your child vaccinated against common diseases.

VHD can cause sudden death and myxi, whilst you may not see wild rabbits, can be carried by the midges and mosquitos and we're seeing a lot more of them in the warm, wet weather we are having. Current advice is to have your rabbit vaccinated against myxi every 6 months to counter this increased threat.

On a separate note, if you have your bunny insured then you need to get vaccinations or you risk invalidating your insurance, you should check your policy. If are not insured - why not? I would strongly recommend it to all paranoid (or other) pet owners out there! It takes away the worry about unexpected vet bills!

I hope this helps!

thankyou all very much for your replies :) . does the weather effect it too then? because another thing I thought about is it's getting to the end of summer now and I read somewhere that it's more common in the middle of summer when there's more flies around? apart from the occasional warm day it's been freezing most of the year so far in my area
