Just had a very pleasant and friendly man at my door on behalf of the RSPCA. He turned out to be a door-to-door version of a chugger (a churgler, perhaps?). He didn't want a donation of money, he wanted my bank account details so I could set up a monthly direct debit to the charity. Is it only me or does anyone else find it unbelievable that a reputable charity would attempt to raise funds in this way? I phoned the RSPCA to complain, they said they raise a lot of money this way, and if he was genuine he would have had ID. Problem with ID is how is a person supposed to know whether it's genuine or not, I don't see this as sufficient verification of a person's credentials.

I was actually quite shocked. Had he been asking for cash I would have given him some, but no way am I handing out my bank account details to strangers!

The RSPCA have taken my details and will be contacting me.

Most certainly wouldn't give my bank details to someone who turned up on the door step

 

I would have thought this was a very irresponsible way to seek donations. We are constantly being told to take care of are bank details, shred things, never to give out this info to someone who phones. If I had never seen a real RSPCA ID card I wouldn't know if what I was being shown was a fake.

 

I will be interested to hear what the RSPCA have to say for themselves

That is just unbelieveable! I am glad you complained! I am sure he was a lovely man but like you say, but just handing over your bank details??? Errrrmmm no. I would be seriously worried about the people that ARE giving them over.

 

Even if he had ID what would that tell you and how would you know if it was genuine? How easy would it be to fake ID like that!?

 

I think thats seriously dodgy and tbh I have lost a lot of faith in the RSPCA since we went to rehome a dog........but thats another story!

I'm with you on this one. We're told not to give our bank account details then organisations do this.

We fairly often get people knocking on our door in exactly the same way and usually claiming to be from a 'charity' I've never even heard of needless to say I always decline. There's no escape though because there always seems to be some in our local town centre too

I had a phone call from British Heart Foundation asking for my card / bank details. When I told the lady that I wasn't interested as she could be anybody, she was most put out.

Have had a lot of these recently - never used to... Was the PDSA today but had a young girl from a cancer charity last week asking the same thing 9asked if my mum or dad were in! ) Am happy to give a donation on the spot and i offered both times and it was declined. they wanted my bank details and a monthly amount. thats not something you should be able to decide on the doorstep.
