Black Country Museum

Recommended Posts

I had a teacher training day today so my grandma and grandad took Sean and I to the Black Country Museum. It was great fun and we even got to go down in the mines and in the wet limestone tunnels. It was a great experience and I would truly reccomend the place to anybody visiting the area. There is also a house that has some hens and a stunning cockerel and oh yes two saddleback pigs! 8)

I've been there too Martin and had a fantastic time!

Personally i loved the Olde Fashioned Sweetie Shoppe :D the chip shop always has a huge queue too but they cook the chips in animal fat so didnt bother as OH & I are veggie.

Did you play the street games? Hoop & stick etc?

There were no street games. But the carter man gave me a horse-shoe. Apparently he is not alloud to because they are reserved for school parties. However there was an old lady who was celebrating her birthday and she got a large one from off the shire horse and the man asked me if I would like a smaller one! 8)

We've been there as well. We went between christmas and new year and it was freezing.

We had chips from the chip shop and ate them in a little alleyway between two of the buildings. They were fantastic chips :D

Harry and Juliette had a picture taken by a poster of one Dans relatives (not sure of the relationship a great-great-great something) who was called Joe Darby and he was very famous as he could jump over snooker tables from as standing start and could jump on and off an egg without breaking it 8) He was quite a famous Black Country character.

I'm sure Dan will enlighten you all with details if required

That's somewhere I'd love to go so thanks for the recommendation. Perhaps we'll make it there in the summer holiday. Have you been to the Victorian Town at Blists Hill near Ironbridge, Martin. It sounds like it might be quite similar - lots of hens, geese, pigs, sheep and horses there along with a street of Victorian shops and a school with a very scary teacher!

Kate

We have also been to Blists Hill. It is fab :D:D

My friend works there part time and has been the teacher and also the candle and rug maker.

They have an old fashioned sweet shop and you can buy all the old fashioned sweets there. There is a victorian fairground, a lovely pub, complete with sawdust and loads of chickens, pigs etc.

It makes a brilliant day out as you can visit the Ironbridge (World Heritage Site) and there are also various museums. Ironbridge is a lovely place to visit

I'm sure the boys would love Enginuity and you could visit the Coalport China Museum

We've been to Blists Hill several times Debs and yes, you're right, the boys love it :D ! I love the candle making bit best. Last time we went, it was really quiet and the chap talked to us for ages about how the candles were made and life in general in Victorian times. Fascinating. Have you tried the pork scratchings from the butchers yet? Best I've ever tasted!! I have to get my carbolic soap fix from the chemists every time I go there though! Love the stuff and come home with bars in my bag  !

I've not been to the Black Country Museum yet though and that's going to be remedied for sure before too long!

The ticket is really good as we bought one, unfortunately only used it once

We only live about 20 minutes away :(

There always seems to be somewhere else to go and not enough weekends/holidays.
