I heard the other day that one of the puppy walkers near here won't go into Starbucks with the supervisor and I thought it was a bit strange, but I guess this might have something to do with it. I think we should ask them if they've turned the taps off everytime we go, far more effective than a boycott. Bpycotts only work if enough people do it and i don't think they will. Guest Posted October 8, 2008 Share Posted October 8, 2008 went to Borders today and they have a Starbucks instore. We had a coffee and a pannini and Ian asked about this story. The girl said that the thermometers and stirrers they use for the milk are kept in a container that has constantly trickling boiling water on them to keep them sterilised. She said research has been done and that is the most effective way to keep them clean as they are in constant use. Milk can build up bacteria very quickly and this is why they do it. She agreed it was wasteful but they have no other option apparently. She showed him the machine and it is only a trickle of water, not exactly the gushing taps the link would have us believe! Strange because 'The Sun' aren't known to blow things out of proportion, are they? Like helly says, better to ask questions I think than Boycott outright, unless it's Tesco of course !!! I boycott Starbucks not because of their ethics, but simply because I don't approve of the Americanisation of our high streets. They keep their scoops in for scooping the ice cream. And they are big on being green too. MadMitch Posted October 9, 2008 Author Share Posted October 9, 2008 Sorry, I was watching it on the news when the Starbucks spokesperson was talking about it and saying that they were not happy about doing it but hadn't yet found a suitable alternative. I posted the info afterwards and didn't pay attention to where it came from. Doesn't really affect me as I don't use them or any other major coffee franchise, prefer to support my local trade.
