ali-s
I keep getting pop ups appearing when I am on the PC Mostly for on line poker sites and dating agencies. I have lost count of the number of laptops, mobile phones and TV's I have won Can anyone tell me how to get rid of them once and for all? And where did they come from? Thank you. Craig
Ali Sounds like you have some delightful "spyware/adware" installed, like most things bad its easy to get but hard to get rid of. I'm guessing as you dont know what browser you use, its internet explorer (has a E icon to load it) As a start you can use a thing called "Spy Bot S&D" its completey free and very good. Its simple to use but any problems just shout. It has a wizard when you first run it, you should be ok. You can find it on http://www.safer-networking.org/en/index.html or direct to the download: http://public.planetmirror.com/pub/spybot/spybotsd14.exe There are some other tools to clear them off but spybot is the easist and best I've found so far. Let me know how you get on. Craig. No warrenty implied etc.
Guest
that's good advice. the reason I asked about the browser and the version is that later versions of Internet Exploreer (which is probably the one you have) have an inbuilt pop-up stopper that can be switched on and off... it might also be that you have a search-bar that has attached itself to Internet Explorer - and Craig's suggested tools should root those out for you. ali-s
Thanks for the advice Craig. I am totally useless with technology. My 10 year old will sort it for me tomorrow Phil, the pop up stopper is switched on, that is why I was confused. Thanks for the replies. Oh and I have won another laptop, a pink one
Guest
Did someone say..... PINK???????? At the risk of sounding completely girlie ( ), I would LOVE a pink computer....
ali-s
Yes PINK I have won lots of them
Craig
No problem. lots of free tools out there to fix most things. If you want to make your laptop pink, have a look round on the internet for "laptop skins" there basically big stickers that cover the laptop. If you have a proper pc a can of spray paint will have the same effect. You need to know what your doing though. What is it with pink anyway? Guest
Yes PINK I have won lots of them Lots?? How do you manage that??
The Dogmother
Try going to lavasoft.com and downloading Adaware. I run it once a week to get rid of any pop-ups. It's free and works well. Spybot attacks slightly different things and if you run both on your machine, it will be clean as a whistle!
ali-s
[ Lots?? How do you manage that?? Its the darn annoying pop ups They pop up with a meesage saying I have won a pink laptop. They are probably a scam and no way am I going to click on the acceptance button.
ali-s
Still having trouble with the pop ups. I tried to download Spybot S&D unsuccessfully Going to try Claret site next. If this doesn't work the laptop is going in the wheelie bin. Some of the sites I am now getting up on the screen are disgusting and I don't want the children to see them. Eyren
Hi You might want to just use a different program to do your surfing - one that is less vulnerable to all these nasty adware things! I use Firefox - it's free and just as easy to use as Internet Explorer Just go to http://www.mozilla.com/ and you should see a green box near the top of the page that says "Download Firefox". Click on that link, then when it's finished downloading, close your browser window and get your son to help you install it I use the Mac version, but all versions of Firefox are pretty similar - it has a pop-up blocker, and if you click on "File" in the menu bar and then on "Import", it should allow you to import all your bookmarks, connection settings, etc from Internet Explorer, so you can get back online right away Let us know if you try it! chocchick
I use Firefox - it's free and just as easy to use as Internet Explorer Ditto, I hardly get any pop-ups now. Most viruses etc. seem to be targetted at Internet Explorer so I feel safer using firefox as well.

Hope so - as it should be easy to resolve without resorting to the Wheelie Bin Let us know if you're still having trouble - I don't mind giving you a step by step guide to downlaoding and installing spybot - it does a good job, or a guide for Mozilla Firefox - or both
