Guest
I need some suggestions for car games please folks, after a friendly game of 'yellow car' nearly turned into WW3 this afternoon. Any suggestions will be gratefully accepted!
Mrs Frugal
Mine love the meal game. Look for lorries that have brand names on their trailers like "Walkers Crisps", "Kelloggs Crunchy Nut" etc and see if you can make breakfast then dinner and then tea with the all the different things they advertise. Sounds dull but it's good fun! Keeps them looking out of the window too if they are a bit car sicky!
ubereglu
Oooo, I can think of lots of car games... 1)I spy-just as long as you know you won't get driven chronically insane! 2)A-Z car game-You have to find the whole alphabet on either signs or cars etc. I usually go for signs-it's easier! 3)Disgusting food game-Where you think of something you love food-wise and then substitute the nice looking things in it for horrible things, like eyeballs. That'll be alright as long as you choose not to listen! I'll add some more to this later, when I think of some!
Guest
My Grandma's Cat always used to go down well... especially if you specialize into (say) a horror version... Phil
Guest
My Grandmas Cat? I've never heard of it - how does that one go? Can it be kept going for hours on end without children falling out, and mum (ie, ME) pulling her hair out?
Guest
it's an alphabet game.. you go round in turn: My Grandma's cat is an artful cat My Grandma's cat is a beautiful cat My Grandma's cat is a curious cat etc... that's how iit should go - except my kids prefer a themed version (usually horror): and this is what it normally sounds like: My Grandma's cat is an amputee cat My Grandma's cat is a brain-dead cat My Grandma's cat is a carcass of a cat etc.... it can go on for hours - but you'd wish it wouldn't!! simply go round again and allow no repetitions... but it's quite an educational game and must satisfy the national curriculum target points for story telling, imagination and alphabet-learning - or summat! (yawnnnnnn!!!) alternatively - get a car CD player and play them some Kinks... Phil
Mrs Frugal
That's a good one. I'd forgotten about that. We also like the shopping game. I went to the shops and I bought an apple. I went to the shops and I bought an apple and a pot of yogurt. I went to the shops and I bought an apple, a pot of yogurt and some carrots. I went to the shops and I bought an apple, a pot of yogurt, some carrots and a toothbrush. You get the drift! First one to miss something out or get the order wrong is out! The Dogmother
We do the same one, with each item beginning with the next letter of the alphabet.
Guest
oooh yes - our used to play that for hours. I'd start.. I went shopping and I bought some lovely red apples Lythan would continue: I went shopping and I bought some lovely red apples and a bag of carrots Emrys (middle son) would chip in: I went shopping and I bought some lovely red apples and a bag of carrots and an alien death ray Hywel (oldest son) would add.. I went shopping and I bought some lovely red apples and a bag of carrots and an alien death ray and a barbie-crushing machine Carys (youngest) would continue.. I went shopping and I bought some lovely red apples and errr.... (prompted several times) errr .... and a piece of cheese (she always bought cheese for some reason - or a small aubergine, because she liked that word - and I think she heard it on "Goodness Gracious Me") it would go on for hours and hours - great game Kate!!! Phil PS does anyone remember the character off the Fast Show who would go out shopping and would come back and his wife would ask... “Did you get the milk?” “Even better than that!” he’d say, “I got a golf club, several small gnomes and a badger!” he'd never have bought the thing he went out for - we used to play that too - it was called the "Even Better" game... but most of the time we used to just make up stories - and they came in series.. Lythan used to do a series called the magic trunk bed series (like a bunk bed - but with three - they always sent me off to sleeep - went on for hours!!) I used to tell a series called the horror bus driver - and there was a horror pizza series and a series about three witches who had a cat who was called sooty - he was a white cat - but he lived in the fireplaces - and all their spells went wrong... ahh - those were the days... now they just have their gameboys, books and portable DVD player... (still it means we can listen to the radio - which is bliss!)
theherd123
'Buzz' is a great game to play and helps kids with number sequence and times tables. Choose a number to BUZZ e.g 3, so any number with the number 3 in it is replaced with the word 'buzz' to make the game harder this can also apply to any multiple of it too to... 1, 2, BUZZ, 4 5, 6, 7, 8, 9, 10 etc or 1, 2, BUZZ 4, 5, BUZZ 7, 8, BUZZ 10 etc Each of the kids takes turn in shouting out a number. I dont think this next game has a name but you start by picking a ramdom word eg 'telephone' the next person has to start their word with the last letter of the word just chosen Telephone - elephant - tree - elf - fingers etc - it can go on for ages as long as they dont start using insulting words
Guest
or the one-word-at-a-time-story.... they used to love that - just go round one at a time and add one word at a time - it never creates a coherent story - but they used to think it was hilarious... AnnieP
We play TLA (Three letter acronym) game based on the cars we see and their number plates. OH and I play a rude version , but with children they could just try to think of three words which make sense: eg a number plate containing the letters RAR= Rock And Roll
Cate in NZ
We play TLA (Three letter acronym) game based on the cars we see and their number plates. OH and I play a rude version , but with children they could just try to think of three words which make sense: ega number plate containing the letters RAR= Rock And Roll We play that too We also used to play spot the Norbert (in Europe), and the Eddie (in England) Story tapes were wonderful for long journeys, I used to borrow the taped versions of popular books from the library and when they were younger they'd listen to these stories for quite a long while without getting bored. We used to play the shopping game to until son decided to spoil it all on a train journey in the company of my (naughty little) sister.... ie a childless and irresponsible adult who laughed longer and louder the ruder he got. The market ended up sounding better equipped than Ann Summers and I fought between sounding overly prudish and strict Mum, and enjoying the laugh with the lot of them. Not a game for teenagers out to show off their newly expanded vocabulary
AnnieP
Ooh yes: Lorries.... how sad is that? We look for Norbert Dentressangle's too...and Eddies (of course), but my fav is Willi Betz. living near the M4 we see a great variety...... Turners of Soham, Prestons of Potto.... we also play the mine. yours game, where every car we overtake is mine, then his etc. I always manage to get the bangers! ALSO: we explode caravans with imaginary hand grenades as we pass them (sorry to all you caravan owners out there), and we have a Skoda Exploder button...... We also play "that's my lorry"...... whichever you claim, you can have the contents, but you're only allowed one, so once you've chosen it, you have to wait for the other person to choose one... then you are allowed to swap yours for a better one, if you see one, in turns. I usually go for Virgin Wines vans As you can see, we like driving on motorways.... No kids to play either

Sheilaz
Some great ideas here, and yes, we did enjoy the caravan prog. last night Annie, I thiought I'd invented the contents of lorry game, with Esther! She was getting a bit worried when I kept choosing beer lorries at 6am one journey, "you'll be drunk & driving". I had to change the subject when the travel sickness took over. far too many Cadbury's & Walker's lorries! We decided that for big stores you could choose an item, and parcel vans, you choose yourself a present! We like (sorry, I hate) Yes & no game! Say anything you like, ask questions, but don't use those 2 words. We have 10 lives then game stops. Also, Word Association Football. Start with a word, next player says one that is in someway connected. Doh, like the thread on this forum. But, no repetition or you're out. Have fun!
