What has that got to do with the price of coal......

Our former neighbour once had a bonfire so fierce that the hedge caught fire. :?

We managed to extinguish it with hose pipes.

We abandoned the ashtray altogether & let the ash drop through. The next day he uses a small handshovel to scoop all the ash into a metal bucket which is then kept outside the French windows and needs emptying every 2 or 3 days.

Brilliant! We don't need an ashtray at all. I used to hate touching that horrid metal tray, the job is much easier now. :D

Would this work for your fireplace?

Sorry Sheila....didn't mean to ignore your post.

The grates are fairly deep Baxi grates with this kind of ashpan.

I'd be digging forever. :D Will bear it in mind though.

Have just bought three new ones....and managed to write a cheque out of the joint account...so he has paid. He'll never notice.

I picked up the wrong cheque book on the way out of the house.

Shame. :D

:) Ah, a proper Northern fireplace then! Mine's only a softie southern thing, I'd forgotten about the deeper sort. My idea wouldn't work for you then, we can sweep it out on one level, it isn't a drop down.

Glad you've invested in some more, it's a shame they do disintegrate though. Made me laugh about the chequebooks.
