Tips for Naming Your Chicken

Naming your chickens can be difficult. There are several themes I think about when naming a new chicken.

1. Old lady names such as Matilda, Hilda or Agnes always seem to suit hens.

2. Their personality - some chickens are dominant or submissive or very inquisitive.

3. Flowers. Flower names such as Lily, Clover and Snowdrop always seem to suit hens.

4. Colour. For a buff chicken, perhaps Buttercup, for a black chicken, Midnight, or for a white chicken, anything to do with snow such as Snowball.

5. Other languages. For example, Siu Pak means Snow White in Chinese and Boba means crazy in Portuguese.

6. Other species, such as Pigeon, Duck, Raven, Midge, Rook, Mule, Chipmunk or just plain Chicken.

7. Brand names such as Starbuck.

8. The bird's intended purpose: if it intended for the freezer then something like casserole or nugget is appropriate.

9. TV characters including Disney and Looney Tunes.

10. Things that are just plain cute (in your eyes) such as Miffy, Sailor, Pirate or Piper.

11. Human food, such as Cookie, Toffee or Peanut.

 

However, here are some things to avoid when naming your new addition.

1. Naming them something you wouldn't say in front of your grandmother such as anything containing swear words.

2. Something that won't grow with them, for example chick may be fine as a chick but may be a bit odd by the time they have grown into a mean rooster, just like Posy works on a human baby but not a 20 year old law graduate.

3. Naming them gender-specific names before you know what gender they are.

So called old fashioned names I would choose definitely. We are getting two more chooks soon and we have chosen Daphne and Beryl. I also liked Cynthia, Jemima, Olive, Mabel, Mildred, Beatrix, Felicity, in fact I wrote quite a long list tee hee hee - I'm going to have to get loads more chooks just to use up the great names! Have fun choosing, it will probably come to you when you see them and get to know them. Our Priscilla is definitely a Priscilla once you get to know her PP

I'm always thinking of names for my future chickens and have made a list. The latest one I fancy is Heike, which is Dutch for Henry. The German vet on that programme about the Scilly Isles is called Heike. She wants to revive her career as a foot model. I thought that Heike would be a good name for a chicken because it means Ruler of the House, and also chickens have lovely long toes, suitable for foot modelling :lol:

Mine are called Chickpea and Yolko :D

 

:think: If I were to get others I would call them Pumpkin and Sesame... no idea why!

 

Do you like cute little chickeny names like yolko?

Or colours?

Or friends names?

You could go for names of dishes made with eggs, for example Custard, Quiche or Meringue, or you could go for the names of things that the hens themselves like to eat, like the herbs, Parsley or Coriander. Or the creepy crawlies they might go after, like Earwig (no, perhaps not.)

 

I've been thinking of names that you could shorten to one syllable and which would still sound nice, for example a hen with a name of Buddleia could be called Bud.

Well my brother wants Bertie for the Light Sussex and then for the Bluebelle I was thinking Lucy?? or Daisy (Then if I get one more I could call her Maisie!)

I like the names you have chosen. If you wanted to go with a theme, you have a Lucy you could go with Ethel from "I Love Lucy". You might have to ask your mum who they are as I suspect they are before your time. :wink: Lucy and Ethel are long time friends who find themselves in all sorts of mischief.

Ours are called Paxo, Sage and Onion... :oops: Sage is quite knowledgable (and a bit skitty) Onion looks like an onion... fluffy Mohican .... and Paxo arrived last week so was named by default.. poor chook.. they do suit their names though!

Bit like children.. they kind of grow into them! When we had our son and called him Silas eveyone thought we were mad (as did O.H!).. But now.. well, can't imagine him being called anything else!

5. Dot & Nora??? (Bit weird but funky names!)

I like Lucy and Matilda as I like names I can make pet names out of. I know Lucy would become Juicey Lucy or Goosey Lucy and Matilda would become Tilda or Tilley and then Tildipoos or something similar :oops::oops::oops::lol:

 

But then you can always give them their proper name when they are being naughty, as if they ever listen :roll::lol: .

I love naming them after strong women / characters... even modern day ones

eg..

Buffy

Hermionie

Zena

Lara Croft

lolita (for the one that squats too readily) :lol:

Lizzie

etc

 

I've always been a bit supersticious about giving pets matching names though. Whenever I have given a set of pets matching names (Salt and Pepper the gerbils for example) one fo them always dies prematurely... then you have to get a new one in and call it vinegar :roll:

 

I've avoided matching names ever since. (Don't even ask what happend to "Oi" and "You" he Jack Russell puppies.)
