Butter and Spreads?

Recommended Posts

I've just picked this from a different topic

Quote - Redfox

Fat-free is a really bad idea - the walls of all your cells are made of lipids, and whilst some can be synthesized, not all can - hence the phrase "essential fatty acids".

I avoid excess saturated fat, and also trans fatty acids (found in most margs and butter-based spreads - except Lurpak Spreadable, because they're illegal in Denmark), so most of my fat intake is from olive oil, nuts, oily fish and the aforementioned Lurpak Also, dare I say it, poultry fat is mostly unsaturated and so healthier than mammal fat

In fact, rather than choosing fat-free varieties of foods, I avoid them because they are often loaded with sugar to make up for the lack of fat-soluble flavours, so they leave you feeling hungry again half an hour later Quote

I use butter, olive oil or Lurpack. My son has been asking me to ask on here about spreads for some time now. He says that packs of spread used to say "hydrogenated fats" but since they received such bad press, that has disappeared from the list of ingredients. They can't have suddenly removed it - what do they call it now? and why have the manufacturers been allowed to remove it from the listing?

For cooking I have always used rapeseed oil as I read somewhere a very long time ago that it is the best oil to use. I can't remember why, but my feeling is that it doesn't do the bad things to you which other oils can when cooked.

I am pleased to discover that Tesco sells an organic Rapeseed Oil, so this is what I now use. I use Olive Oil for salads etc.

Ginette.

Just looked on line at Tesco. Can't find organic stuff. Only Golden Fields Pure Rapeseed Oil. Is this what you use?

I currently use organic olive and sunflower from them. Maybe my branch doesn't stock it. Sham, I'd like to give it a try.

It's on the 'Organic Cooking Products' shelf, Tesco's own. Maybe it's just that your branch doesn't stock it. You'll have to put in a request!

Tesco Organic Rapeseed Oil 1 Ltr £1.69

(£0.17/100ml)

From the Organic Cooking Products shelf - see rest of shelf

I used to use the Golden Fields one.

I'll try to remember to look at a few marg tubs when I go to the supermarket tonight...

Hmm I will look out for rapeseed oil :?

I have 2 problems I use so little oil that it often goes cloudy on me the one I was using didn't maybe that is because of the additive and I also have a very small supermaket so the selection is quite poor

Sorry, haven't seen any - I assume a good wholefood store can help you there. I had a quick look on the website belonging to the company that made my hemp-and-cotton handbag, but the only links on there were for beauty products and, shall we say, recreational usage

I hasten to add that the variety grown for fibre and cooking/eating is different from the intoxicating sort! The hemp oil soap sold through the Organic Gardening Catalogue is fantastic, especially for after digging, which always turns my skin to sandpaper - the soap is incredibly smooth and creamy, like those commercial brands that boast about being one-third moisturizer but without the nasty chemicals :D

We get through loads of olive oil, especially in the summer when making lots of salads and dressings, but for stirfries I like macadamia nut oil (almost identical mono-unsaturated fat content to olive oil, and the mild nutty flavour suits Chinese food really well) - it's wickedly expensive, but I only use it in tiny amounts.

Rapeseed oil & Olive oil, together with one of the nut oils (I've forgotten which) are high in monounsaturated fats, and those are supposed to be the healthiest form of fats, certainly in terms of diabetes and cholesterol. I learnt that little nugget of information whilst doing my diabetes training a few years ago. Amazingly quite a few of the economy margarines are apparently made with rapeseed oil, which means that monounsaturated oil based cheapo margarine is actually better for you than the more expensive brand names featuring trans fatty acids and lots of other nasties.

I'm with you Ginette, I get organic rapeseed oil from my local Morrisons which I use for frying, and olive oil for cold use (salad dressings) or drizzling over pasta etc. Butter.... I go for butter, generally Lurpak :D:D But that's because I prefer butter, and I do avoid trans fatty acids wherever possible.

I bought my bag on Cambridge Market - the stall also sells hemp-and-organic-cotton T-shirts, of which I now have two :)

The website is www.puresativa.com - you might be able to find an 'agent' in your area...

Cambridge Market has some fantastic food stalls - I have to avoid the cheese stall as I can easily spend 15-20 quid there (Cashel Blue, loads of French cheeses that I can't remember the names of, melt-in-the-mouth Red Cheshire and the most obscure English regional cheeses ever! 8) )... :D:D:D

Thanks for all that info chaps. Our Tesco is being made into an 'Extra' and is in a state of disarray at them moment - it's hard enough finding my regular shopping, but I will have a look next time I go.

Lesley - I plan to drop in on that shop next time we go to the market, Phil and I are hoping to go that Saturday. Did you say that they stock large sizes of Ecover?

Thanks Anne, I'll have a look at that link in a mo'

That's a shame Louise, I was working in Oxford when they changed the traffic system and it affected loads of businesses quite badly. It was a pain, because I had a parking space in central Oxford so that I could get out to see clients, but this all made it very difficult to get anywhere at all.

There is a lovely organic butchers in the covered market.

The shop used to be right in the centre next to the post box last timne I was there it was an art and framing shop

There were only 4 butchers left then amazing given that it was originaly a meat market

It was immortalised for posterity as it appears in the Morse Episode Greeks bearing gifts and was also in the film about the Oxfod rowing team (name escapes me) 8)
