Redwing
I have had my girls for a month but have never supplied a dustbath, they can't dig one as I have wire mesh under the Eglu run. Someone at gardening club mentioned that some tyres were put on the bonfire pile at the community centre but couldn't be burned, I nabbed some to make a wormery but had one small one left which I filled with compost and stuck in the Eglu run as a dustbath. My girls love it. so far they have: Ignored it Bok Bokked at it Screamed at it Pecked it S"Ooops, word censored!"ed their porridge covered beaks along the side of it Stood on the side and pooed outwards Stood on the side and pooed inwards Jumped off of it flapping wildly Had a nap in it Pecked around in it Thrown the soil out of it with their feet Is dustbathing supposed to be an instinctive thing? Gamebird
Is dustbathing supposed to be an instinctive thing?Yes it is, but obviously not in car tyre. You're lucky they go near the tyre at all. Mine were terrified when I put a corn-on-the cob in their enclosure. I had to take it away in the end and s"Ooops, word censored!"e all the corn off for them before they would eat it. Hen Watch
Sounds like they are having fun with the tyre even if they don't use it as intended My lot have a plastic underbed storage box bought from a supermarket. They use it a lot in winter. Even though I don't always see them in it, I know they use it as I am forever refilling it with dry earth from the greenhouse when they flick it all over the place.
