2 but it depends on the size of the newsletter...I am assuming a 4pp A4 newsletter

Quite a lot if you need it as I am a freelance writer and have written lots of newsletters myself!!! For example, to look more professional, I would go for a 2-column design. Try to put your visuals (photos etc) at the top or bottom of a column and not in the middle. When writing your stuff make sure you include all the most important details in the first sentence and don't leave anything important to the end of the article. Use "call outs" to highlight important pieces (those are where you pull out quotes from the article in a different font/colour & size, perhaps surrounded by a border, and use them to break up the text. They are also good for getting text to fit in the available space. What else do you want to know?

Please restrict the amount of fonts you use to no more than two. Use bold text rather than fancy fonts - much easier to read - especially of you are trying to get across important information like times and dates or venues.

 

Think about using a font with curly ends (serif) for the headings like TNR - although if you are able to use Georgia that would be my first choice and a straight font (sans serif) for the body like Arial - or first choice if you have it Helvetica.

 

If your publication is going to be online or emailed rather than printed, think about the fact that not all computers will have the fonts you are using installed. Check here:

Don't forget to use paragraphs, many people have no concentration for long and wide lengths of typing so columns are also of benefit - two narrow columns are more likely to be read than one wide column.

 

If you have more than one page of text, break it up with small illustrations or photos, again to make it more interesting but also easier to read.

 

If this is more than one page, view your newsletter in a *two-page spread* as then you will see it as your reader will see the final print and you may move illustrations around to *balance up* better.

 

Limit the amount of colours you use (in your typing and headings etc) and don't forget that some colours will not show up as well in actual print as they look on your screen. Don't do *rainbow printing* ie a heading in 5 different colours as some colours will be less visable on the print.

 

Don't forget the cost of colour printing (both on your private printer and commercially) if you are doing many copies. Sometimes black print, although not as pretty, can be a lot cheaper and is sometimes the only option if you are printing one copy and then photocopying the rest (the way many newsletters are produced).

 

Print at least one copy off before *going to print* for two reasons; one to check that every thing can be seen properly but also to proof read the typing. It is much easier to see mistakes on paper than on the screen. If at all possible (I do realise this is an exam piece) ask someone else to proof read your typing as they will spot things you wont.

 

Be as professional as you possibly can and don't ever allow anyone to see anything than your best work as that is what you will be judged on.
