fantastic weekend and book

Recommended Posts

Just had a fantastic weekend with my bestfriend in London. We went to Fortnum and Mason for afternoon tea. It was looooooverly. Anyway we perused the shop afterward and found the cutest chicken doorstop. I would have bought it but it was £35.

Later my friend said I would like to buy you a birthday present so we went into Waterstones to look at books. I found the most fantastic book. Its called The Christmas Book and its by Sheherazade Goldsmith published by Dorling Kindersley. It has some great ideas of things to bake, make and do for xmas, cheaply or by using recycled materials. And guess what? yes they had a chicken door stop very similar to the one I saw in F&M. Its made using fabric from an old coat or trousers etc.

I spend every free minute looking at this book, it has inspired me to make lots of gifts this Christmas. If you dont buy it, just go and look at it.

I sort of want that book, but I've loathed Scherezade Goldsmith since she got married in a cardi (seven years ago now I think). I'm not sure I can get past that and still enjoy the book. Also, I object to her description as a typical London girl about town before she got married, she was always minted.

The poor girl has a crazy name and couldn't help being born into posh. But she can help what she has done since, and a lot of that has been focused on being a professional, working woman, a good mother, not living off her silver spoon, and by bringing good old-fashioned grow yer own, green values to a wider audience. I think that can only be a good thing. I'm a cockney not a posh, and I say up hippies, wherever they are to be found.

I've got it too, & once I rediscover my sewing machine from under the dust sheets, will be producing my first chook doorstop too!

p.p Know what you mean about the author, I must admit to a certain amount of inverted s"Ooops, word censored!"bery when I first looked at it, but had to make a snap purchase decision as DS was complaining about leaving the shop....now....as small boys do! xx

So far I have made-

1 chicken doorstop

Stollen

Christmas biscuits (the ones with sweets in the middle.

i wish my digital camera wasn't broken or I could take a photo of the chicken. I have made it for my son's teacher, as he named one of the chickens after her (Mrs Williamson). I made it out of an old wool plaid skirt.
