onions...how to avoid tears...

Recommended Posts

sorry to start a thread on onions...but I've had my mum complaining about them again (as she cooks my girls dinner on an evening) , and I've told her several times how to avoid tears....

cut the ends off the onion and peel....

immediately rinse with cold water

rinse knife, and chopping board

put peelings straight in bin...(rinse hands again if necessary)

slice, chop or dice and put in the dish you are making....no tears....

(unless you keep hovering over the top of them, and then strong onion fumes will grab you and make your eyes water after all, but really you would have to hang over them...which would be odd as well as dangerous :-D)....

Honestly it works. and is very simple...water...just a quick rinse...

no standing on one leg, or having a teaspoon in your mouth, or wearing goggles...just a quick rinse with tap water...

LOL...apologies for the post....

I became very sensitive to onions when expecting MD, and there is in existence, a picture of me in the bus that we travelled Australia in, peeling onions wearing a snorkel and facemask! (and clothes obviously!) I still struggle but I agree that getting rid of the ends quickly helps, although I did hear that leaving the root end on until the last minute also helps.

Getting someone else to chop them would ultimately be the best thing!

A Chef told me keep the CUT surface on the board so the vapours can`t escape.

So i cut it in half, top to bottow and put each half cut side down on plastic chopping board.

Peel one half, put it cut side down again, Peel the other and put it cut side down again, Chop both chef styly (just not as fast) and straight in the pan.

Chooping board gets turned over so the onion juice is still trapped and then in dishwasher for a super clean.

Works a treat for me even when cutting four or five onions.

Still wear waterproof mascara though!
