hillfamily
I went out to gather everyone into the run this afternoon and Ada was falling over all the time. For want of a better way to describe it, she looked as though she was drunk......very wobbly, no balance and falling over all the time when she moved She was fine 1 1/2 hours earlier when I was out in the garden and all the others are OK She has no other symptoms and her eyes are bright, nose clear, breathing normal, vent all clean, comb nice and red, crop as it should be. She's bright and perky and is eating OK I've brought her indoors and popped her in a pet carrier to restrict her movement so she doesn't harm herself. She got food and water right in front of her so she doesn't have to move to eat. I've given her some rescue remedy and some arnica, aconite and rhux tox pillules and she's eaten some sweetcorn. I've phoned the vets but unfortunately the vet who normally sees chooks, has moved away. The vet nurse I spoke to, has made an appointment with another vet, who she thinks has some chook knowledge, for tomorrow afternoon. The vet isn't in tonight so she has to check in the morning if she will see Ada - if not they will think of something else or I can see my usual vet who deals with our furry zoo - hence my urgent searching for some ideas of what the problem is. There was a chook on a BHWT rescue earlier this year who had similar symptoms - turned out to be an ear infection that was causing an imbalance problem. She was given antibiotics to ease the problem and gradually learned to adapt to walking and falling at the same time. Not sure if this could be the problem I did also wonder if Ada may have trapped a nerve or possibly, somewhere in the back of mind is a thought that there can be an ovary cyst problem that can cause symptoms like this Any thought, ideas or advice would be gratefully received Thank you xxx
chelsea
oh dear poor Ada, it sounds like its come on all very sudden Pam... im sorry I dont know what it is but am wishing her a speedy recovery. Out of the 2 ideas you think it could be I would sway more towards the trapped nerve as if it was an ear infection wouldnt she be off colour or off her food? Cazjohn
I've had a similar problem with two of my girls but only after they had already been ill and lost a lot of weight. I seem to remember something similar on the forum before I think it was calcium deficiency? Hopefully someone with a bit more knowledge will be along soon. Good luck at the Vets, Caroline
hillfamily
Thanks guys This is real puzzler at the mo I did wonder if maybe Ada's legs were having problems holding her weight - she's my pure breed Light Sussex (only 8 months old) and Heavy Breed doesn't come close to describing her. She is a very buxom girl However she has very substantial legs and has always had limestone flour added to her feed. She does have a tendency to like to jump up on things although since I've clipped her wing that seems to have reduced the height she can jump up to. I did wondered if she had been jumping on things this afternoon and landed awkwardly Well she's asleep now and seems reasonably comfortable so I'll keep every thing crossed for her
alih
This may be way out but could she be on her way to laying a softy? One of mine did exactly what you have described before laying one - I though she was dying as she kept falling over and could barely stand. As she is generally well I hope it is something that minor - let us know how she is?
hillfamily
Morning All :D Just a quick update...... There's been no change overnight - she's still very bright and perky, chatting away to me and is eating and drinking OK but she still can't stand up or move without falling over and she's very very unbalanced I'm taking her to the vets this afternoon to get some antibiotics in case she has an ear infection causing the imbalance and I will check her out later in case she has a stuck egg. She indoors in the warm in a small cage so she doesn't need to move to get to her food and water and she can't fall about and risk hurting herself. If you looked at her sitting in her cage, you wouldn't think she was a poorly chook Thanks for your support and help.......much appreciated :D
dancing cloud
Best of luck this afternoon - fingers crossed it can all be sorted quickly . Keep us posted.

hillfamily
We're back from the vets - lots of strange looks from the people in the waiting room and an interesting conversation with a little boy who's 5 She has had a thorough examination but the vet doesn't know what's wrong (not had much experience with chooks but was happy to have a look at her). The vet confirmed her heart and lungs sound fine, eyes bright, poo fine, crop ok, checked her legs and wings all OK and she's a good weight :D The vet also did an internal examination and couldn't feel anything abnormal or any sign of a stuck egg and agreed that to look at her she didn't look like a poorly chook, until she stands up and tries to move She's been given a course of baytril which will take care of any infections that may be causing the imbalance and we've just got to wait to see if they help. I'm going to continue with the homeopathic treatment for stress, pain and bruising along with some rescue remedy :D and I'm keeping everything crossed I have to say, she's really trying to stand up and balance, which is more than she was doing 24 hours ago :D As I'm at home all day tomorrow, I'll move her to a slightly bigger crate in the morning to see how she copes with less support around her. chelsea
sounds like a clean bill of health from the vet so its very odd isnt it? I am sure with the baytril to be on the safe side, whatever she has will pass. Keep us posted
hillfamily
Ada's managing to stand up today and has even taken a few very slow and cautious steps, without falling over It looks as though the baytril is working and clearing whatever is causing her to lose her balance I'll see how she is at tea time......I might pop her back in with her friends late tonight to sleep, so they don't forget her, Fifi can have her friend back and Millie Bantie has a big fluffy momma to snuggle under

laurmurf
Hi Pam that's exactly what my Buffy is like this morning - very wobbly and drunk! Hungry and bright otherwise but feels too light and 'keel-y' but i can't tell whether that's cause she's so young compared to my big girls. Is Ada all well now? any repeats? Let's see if the Baytril achieves anything. Why would she be so skinny????
