My sister found these old glass items on a carboot stall some time ago and was wondering if anyone would be able to age them or identify them, they look like some kind of candle holders or something to me, anyone any ideas??

Hi Hen Huggers,

 

I may be wrong but I think they are Victorian 'penny licks'.

 

These were used to serve small portions of ice cream and then returned to be wiped clean and used again.

This has just caused a major row here We both agree that the lower picture is a dog........but he is adamant they are not penny licks He doesn't know what they are, but he's determined to disagree with me

 

If I am proved wrong , I will gracefully concede defeat

I've had a little look on the tinternet and penny licks seem to be smaller versions of wine glasses and have a stem, and from your pic you don't appear to have a stem. However, its not to say these aren't penny licks as well. I shall look some more and let you know what I find - if anything!

That's what I thought but, unfortunately, I have no other suggestions but I will keep looking.

Hi, I mentioned your replies to my sister and she said that they are quite small and have some type of material in the hole, she seems to think it may be wool, I think might scupper the idea of them being used for food???

if they are small small could they be candle putter outters (sorry dont know the correct term)

I am at a loss they are odd little things. actually if they have wool in the bottom, that wouldn't work...

Snuffers = candle putter outers but I don't think so 'cos they usually have little handles so you don't burn your fingers
