What to buy a fussy teen?

Recommended Posts

I've done all my Christmas shopping. Homemade stuff for adults, books for kids - with one exception. My OH's teen sister. She's 14, and one of those girls who spends all night chatting on the interweb (not at ALL like Omleteers!); texting her friends, not saying much, being a very fussy eater, and only seeming to be interested in hair and clothes (glittery make-up, plaid shirt, big belt, small skirt, very groomed hair.) She's not into learning or reading so books are out and music-wise, I wouldn't know where to start with that age group. When asked what she's into she shrugs.

I know she likes High School Musical, but I don't know what that really means or what she's already got merchandise-wise, plus I'm not keen on those sort of presents. We have a £5 rule. There is concern she spends too much time texting so not keen to get her a mobile phone credit top-up, and clothes and make-up are not a safe bet because she's very specific about brands and what she's into.

Nightmare.

Help?!?!

A gift for a fussy teenager at around a fiver? how about a five pound note?

I am going to have to go unimaginative and say a Boots voucher - always a safe bet :D

I buy quite a few unusual gifts from the I Want One of Those and Firebox websites

You can't do right for doing wrong when it comes to cool brands of make up/clothes etc.. dont touch that one with a twenty foot pole

I'm with the others - stick with a boots voucher and you can't go wrong.

If you are desperate to give a gift rather than a voucher you could buy a couple of Lush bath bombs - teenage girls like that special feeling you get when you have a soak with a bomb.

Ah Kitbag, I knew you'd be in the know! Thanks! But alas, she has no iPod.

I quite like the bath bomb idea. That may work. But they're about £3 each and one or two looks stingy.

I'm pretty good at getting bang for my buck - The Book People do books at a fraction of the price, and I know she'll think she's getting 'less' in comparison as she won't know about my cunning shopping ways.

Oh why doesn't she read books?! Gah!!!

does she have an Ipod!? If she does, then how about an Itunes voucher?? As a fairly fussy teen my self, i would be pleased with one!:dance:

Good luck! xxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxx

I was going to suggest the same, but they start at £15 :?

Lush do little gift boxes from £5 upwards I think.

Or some funky coloured nail varnish maybe?

Some pretty socks - all the shops have them at the moment.

Or a cool scarf.......they always go down well.

ooohhh how about an 'accessorize' voucher?? if she loves fashion and things then that would be perfect! They do all kind of things like scarves and gloves and hats and things! I love love love Accessorize! :D:D Or Monsoon? Monsoon is a bit more expensive though :?

Hmm i was a fussy teen and probably still a fussy 21 yr old lol

What about a set of makeup brushes???

Or some jewelery - H&M is fab for cheapish but really nice up to date jewellery

Or a chunky scarf prom Primark - they have some lovely scarf/gloves sets

OR a large weekend bag - they have some fab ones in there too.

From what she sounds like she probably wouldn't mind that it doesn't LOOK that much as it'll be something she likes and Lush/H&M/primark would be places she knows

Any 14 year old girl would read Twilight by Stephanie Meyer - or if you are convinced she wouldn't - get her a cinema ticket to see the film which opens Dec 19. it's a vampire romance. I read the whole set to see what my teenage daughter and ALL her friends were on about. I don't know why all I was offered was Enid Blyton at her age :)

I'm hoping Kitbag can back me up here - but I'm confident :)

Yup!! If she didn't like Twilight then I would eat my hat! I don't actually have a hat to eat but you know what I mean! she would definately love the film too!

Fussy teens seem to like cash! My sister bought a box of those Elizabeth Shaw round mint chocolates for my son one year and in between the chocolates she placed a £1 coin. This went down extremely well with my difficult to buy for son.

You could always get £5 worth of 50ps and do a similar thing.

I'd go with this, everyone I've met so far enthuses about them & they do smell yummy! Even DS (nearly 12) is impressed - £20 later yesterday!!!

They do lovely solid shampoos too (£4.50 - 5.25), which if you aren't too upset to go to about £7, you can buy with a nice little tin to keep it in (£2.75) - great for swimming/sports bags where they have to lug huge bottle of shampoo & conditioner. We have a selection now - DD takes Godiva to the pool, where she uses it as a shower gel too, DS has Squeaky Green to take back to school with him, and I have Hard, which uses FR eggs in the recipe & is designed for hard water areas. (if you buy 2 shampoos you get a tin free! That's why I have mine!! ) They also have a Secret Santa wrapped box pressie for £5 - all done with no thinking about it!

Good luck,

Sha xx

What a good idea, I may well borrow that for an awkward customer, how long did it take for him to notice the pound coins weren't choccies?

He noticed straight away (unlike me!) and was delighted.

I was watching this thread with interest as I have two fussy teens to buy for! So, I was glad to see the suggestion of Twilight for a reader as one of the teens is a very keen reader. I've just ordered it from Amazon!

I am also getting, for the other teen, How to Walk in High Heels. She is v keen on fashion and another friend put me on to it. It sounds right up her street.

Hows about a croc dial for her mobile phone? Next also have some cosmetic bags at £4. They also have a pack of 3 glitter eye liners for £5. I've got some for my chicken sitter who is 13 and a half. What girl doesn't like Next?

What's a croc dial?

Her birthday is three days after xmas. I may well go for the glitter for that, but today I found a big make up kit in the three for twos in Woolies so that's Xmas dusted.

Thanks for all the tips, you teen-savvy bunch of lovelies!
