Preloved Ad-6 free chickens;wife lost interest after 1 week!

Recommended Posts

The picture of the hens in question reminds me of the secret filming of an animal science lab where the beagles ran away from the person entering their cage.

Chickens who are properly cared for will run towards you because they are expecting something good!

That said, there is no way that I know the full circumstances of this individual case.

Just read this thread, wonder if I work on OH....... . give me a few hours.

OH has put his foot down and said no :( . I have to agree with arguments though and I hate it when he's right  . They don't look well cared for, it's suspicious how they are going after one week. he said if they are ill and make my girls ill I'll never forgive myself.... true. Also I know some people try to offload their old birds at end of their laying lives.

Don't know if any of the above is relevent to these advertised girls, or if the people have indedd just got bored. I've emailed them anyway and asked some questions about the hens, as I had done that before my OH got wind of my plan.

I only have gingernut rangers - are the breeds in the advert hybrids and are they large breeds?

The two speckled ones are exactly like our Humbug who is indeed larger than our other chooks (evidently they are dual purpose birds suitable for both meat and eggs, although there would be no way we would ever eat her!!) We only have a mark 2 eglu and have 4 girls although I reckon we could fit in another 2 easily as they free range all day.

Humbug is our favourite -friendly, and inquisitive and a super layer. Would certainly get another in the future.

Maybe you could contact him and see if he would split them but I guess you would have to keep them separate for a while until you knew they were free from everything.

The guy has answered my email and says all 6 are definitely hens, no cockrels. He says he has had them for three weeks now and that he got them all at POL, 6 months old and none of them have started laying yet.

My OH is out at the pub at the mo so with this new info I am going to have another attack when he comes back as it's only an hour from us.

But don't let my plans stop anybody else going for them if you think you can give them a lovely home.

oh - bless them - I'd love those chooks but it wouldn't be fair on my other chooks who have only just learnt how to all get on together. It's a shame they only gave it 3 weeks - but we don't know all the details. At least they are giving them away to a loving home and not just dumping them somewhere or killing them. A very small "at least," I know, but some people wouldn't bother trying to find a new loving owner. I'm a sucker for chickens of any kind - even the scraggy ones. i think I'm actually fondest of the 1 of my 6 who got badly pecked and is a bit scraggy now :)
