Scaley leg

Recommended Posts

I am treating with Ecomite and Diatrom every two weeks. The scales on the legs of both hens are lifting. There's no limping. I'm worried the powder just gets washed off their feet when they walk in the wet grass. Have used vaseline once. I am tempted to wash their muddy feet, dip in the powder then apply vaseline to keep it on. Any advice please.

Some older hens just have raised scales on their legs =- the thing to look for is an exude (crust) under the scales - see the photos in the FAQ section. I treat my hens with the Johnson's anti-mite spray (not licenced for use on poultry in the UK) when they get it. The egg withdrawal is just 7 days and it works wonders.

The scales will remain raised until they are moulted off, but the exude will disappear and the hen won't be worried by itchy legs any more. Please don't be tempted to pick the raised or damaged scales off.

I used the xeno 200 (not licenced in uk for poultry) on my girl with scaley leg. It has cleared it up a treat. It does seem expensive at first but it also de louses them and deworms them and there is alot in the bottle. I spray it on all my 4 girls every few months as a preventative against lice and I think it will last me quite a while.

I use Xeno 200 every 4 months. My girls free range with the wild birds all day and every day and so far they have shown no signs of worms, scaly leg, lice or any other parasite.

I dose each bird on the back of the neck (a place where they can't reach when preening themselves) about an hour after they have gone to bed when they are quiet and easy to handle.

So far I have dosed my 6 chickens twice and there is still plenty left in the bottle.

I know it is not licenced for use on poultry but I think it will only be a matter of time when this sort of product is on the market for garden chickens.

There is also a 7 day egg withdrawal period but I have in the past eaten the eggs and so far have come to no harm. But it's a risk you take.
