Cochins boys or girls

Recommended Posts

cant really see close up but I have 2 cochins and yours look like girls from that distance.

Cochins are very slow to mature so you might have to wait a bit longer for them to develop and for you to find out.

This is my girl Misty to compare -

They are all gorgeous :D How many eggs would you expect to get from them?

Not many at all Paola, my 2 girls were broody from March to September  now they are having their winter break!

I would say cochins are more for "ornamental purposes" (to decorate your garden) than to be a reliable egg layer

You wont get a more nicer natured hen though.....so submissive and gentle. :D

My blue cochin has never been very prolific in the egg laying department and is always broody but my splash cochin was laying three or four a week throughout spring and summer and hardly went broody.

I think that she is the exception though...even the breeder was surprised.

Sounds and looks like my bantams (but on a larger scale) except mine are not submissive and gentle

It is good to find so many people with cochins! Alot of you have said they go broody alot! As you could see in the 1st picture mine are still really young but I would like to know more about them being broody. Should I expect them to be broody all summer?

And it seems a pity to let such gorgeous birds sit in their house all summer and only get up twice a day- do any of you find it better to shut them out the house? (cube blue) Or is there some other strategy to helping them get back to normal?
