mother hen
With the weather being damp and cold I've started to feed my girls layer pellets softened with hot water to make a kind of mash. As an extra treat I sometimes add a tiny bit of poultry spice or corn. It doesn't matter how much I make, it always gets eaten up. I also give them a bowl of corn before bedtime if the forecast is for a very cold night. In addition to this the grub is always kept full of pellets. My question is do chickens tend to only eat what they need or are they greedy? And, am I encouraging over eating by giving them the mashed pellets daily throughout the winter months rather than only on the coldest of days ? moochoo
Even though my girls eat everything in sight they do stop when they're full, so I wouldn't worry too much through winter. I'm sure they'll need more calories to keep warm on these chilly nights.
farrowy
My Hedwig is like a hoover when it comes to peas and it is a bit alarming how quickly she gulps down broadbeans (as though she hasn't eaten for a week - she can't eat them quickly enough!!) - but "Hedwig the Hoover" will stop when she's full
