cleaning a duck pond

Recommended Posts

Hi, i was wondering if anyone could give me some advice about what type of pump they use to empty their duck pond.

I have a pond from the Domestic fowl trust and until recently it was just emptied by tipping down the drain next to it but it has now been moved and sunk into ground in new duck enclosure so i can't do that anymore. Not every pump goes down low enough to empty the pond (i have learnt by expensive mistakes...) Its only about 6cm deep but takes forever to empty with buckets. Anyone have a pump they can recomend that will clear out dirty water?

Cheers

stinky job! We don't use a pump, just an ENORMOUS filter system!

OH uses a pump at work though when he is doing pond work but it's a huge commercial one so probably a bit of overkill!

You can hire them though from places like HSS Hire. Any tool hire should have pumps.

good luck..... and don't do it at the moment, you'll freeze to DEATH!!

I would suggest using a bilge pump for such a low water level. theyre 12v so you would need a small battery (about 7Ah at least) to power it and then a battery charger to recharge it everytime you would need to change the water but that should only take about half an hour to get enough charge to more than do the job. The bilge pump you could get off ebay for next to nothing (theyre used on small boats to get rid of the water in the hull and can handle small bits of detritus and debris - which ducks tend to make!). After that all you would need is the appropriate size and length of hose to reach wherever the drain is.

Hope that helps

This post just made me sad. I remember having a duck for a pet back in high school. It was a gift from a classmate. At the time, I thought it's alright to bathe ducks the way you would a dog. So that's what I did one evening. Sadly, she passed away a few minutes after her bath.
