Chickens I have known!

Recommended Posts

Morning everyone, dragged out of bed at some ungodly hour by my 7 yr old this am. I think he was a cockerel in a former life!

As a child I spent a lot of my childhood in South Derbyshire with my gran. (I now live in London and am in my 40's!) My mum worked which was rare then. My grans friend Mrs Smith kept hens, loads of them free range andhad 2 huge sheds. The thrill of feeding them bread or chicken feed was wonderful for a small girl. She must have lost some to Mr Fox. Whilst she and gran gossiped ( and boy did they gossip) by the Aga I took a basket and looked for eggs. I was always abit nervous of a peck when looking under a hen who had not vacated her pen. Mrs S also raised chicks, had huge boxes of them in the kitchen by the Aga, the noise was phenominal! I loved it.

My husband a British born Cypriot spent a lot of his childhood with an ageing aunt in Lefkara (the lace making village) and can vividly remember the aunt asking what he wanted for dinner. He said "chicken" and you can guess the rest! The chucks were wandering round the houses and she did the deadly deed in front of him. He was mentally scarred for life!

I am working on him and have left the Omlet catalogue out having spent yesterday mooning over it and sighing heavily. I will wear him down. Anyway have a nice day everyone.

Hi nochucksyet - hope you have to change your forum name soon! I remember as a child living next door to a farm who kept a flock of bantums which I used to help feed. Plus I also remember cleaning out their (rather mucky as I recall) house and thinking this was great fun. Our farmer neighbour must have seen me coming  still, I was great friends with their children and we had great fun on the farm during the different seasons.

Fingers crossed for you to have your own little flock.

Good luck! My OH is a dreadful liar, he kept saying 'no' to chickens, so stopped looking at eglus, then just before my birthday a green van saying 'omlet' pulled up and a nice man came and built the cube at the bottom of the garden. Oh got the colour right and even booked a slot the next day to get our battery hens.

So you just never know. I just answered 'chickens' whenever asked what I wanted for birthdays, anniversaries, xmas etc etc. Think he got the message in the end!!!
