Disgusted at Heston Blumenthal's comments (a rant!)

Recommended Posts

I'm not usually a 'ranter' but I couldn't believe Heston's description of the most shocking recipe (in one of the magazines in the Sunday Mail). It's a chicken dish, so don't read on if you're easily offended/upset by nasty things like this.

He describes how you pluck a chicken while it's still alive, then baste it, tuck its head under its wing and rock it to sleep, then put it on the diner table for your unsuspecting guests. Not very funny as it runs off petrified after someone tries to carve it. He says you then kill the poor thing, put chemicals in its throat (I forget what exactly) and cook it. The chemicals do something which means it is still clucking when placed back on the dinner table.

Totally disgusting. Why don't people treat chickens with a bit more respect?

isn't this all part of the cruel, sadistic culture we're finding ourselves in? ....

calm down dear ;) it's okay, the recipe is from the 18th/19th century. I think they were far more cruel and sadistic back then.

I hate it because some people might think it's OK or funny to treat animals like that.

if people think like that then there's something wrong with them anyway.

He's not advocating anyone trys the recipe (mercury is poisonous anyway).

Back in 2004, we went to The Thackary Medical Museum in Leeds where I found out that, in the 19th century....

They had some intriguing homespun remedies in the early/mid 19th Century to cure what ails ya!

"Swallow live snails to eat the phlegm off your chest"

"To cure asthma, dry and powder a toad, make into pills and take one hourly"

"For epilepsy, take the skull of a young woman, pound it into small bits, mix with treacle and take in small doses

didn't make me (or I suspect other people) want to rush out and try them

But you are a sensible level headed person Poet, sadly there are people out there that even though they know it's wrong will still do it, as we know all too sadly.

I know and that sort of person will be cruel to animals without any encouragement. I don't think they need ideas putting in their head, they're already there, sadly!

but, Poet my love, he mentioned it - why???? Anyway, I still think I'm right about today's culture and there will be those who'll think it's funny  still... but if it contains mercury and they're that thick... let them carry on
