Chicken Grass

This is the advertising blurb

Our Economy Poultry Ley is based on short growing, hardwearing grass species to fulfil that basic requirement. Although this mixture contains a little white clover it will not make a significant contribution to voluntary protein intake. However, the sward will provide good ground cover and a very stable, robust pasture even in wet weather. Sow at the higher rate for faster and more even establishment.

AND the more expensive stuff

Our Poultry Pasture is based on short growing, hardwearing grass species to fulfil that basic requirement along with legumes and deep rooting herbs to increase the potential intake of protein, minerals and nutrients from the forage. Not only will this permanent pasture introduce a wider range of leaf matter into the diet, the more diverse habitat will attract a higher number of invertebrates for the free range bird to consume. The sward will generally provide good ground cover and a very stable, robust pasture, even in wet weather. Sow at the higher rate for faster and more even establishment.

I'm hoping it will be more hard wearing so I've just ordered the "Poultry Pasture"

the girls gave a bag of this to my OH for xmas!

He planted it a couple of weeks ago and put omlet fencing around: we've already got the first signs of growing grass!

We're hoping it will withstand the rigours of free ranging chooks a bit more successfully. Saying that, we've also recently sectioned off the area where the lawn used to be from the girls and it's starting to come back already too

My plan is to divide the garden into two halves, sowing first one half then the other. Hubby wants to do it all in one go and to keep the hens in their 9ft x 6ft run for 3 to 4 weeks :cry: This is causing no end of argument between us as they are used to free ranging all day. My real problem is that the henhouse is immovable and I will have to temporarily rehouse the hens in a small arc with a teeny run at the other end of the garden. That in itself is OK as I will let them out all day.

Do you think they will cope with the upheaval?

Can you cope with the black looks & emotional blackmail these little feathered creatures mete out when unimpressed by something  ? As long as they can free-range most of the day, my 3 chooks seem to put up with most things!
