abwsco
OK, we still haven't clipped any wings as we both feel too cowardly to try :oops:plus there's only one who sometimes feels the need to fly over from their section of the garden. However, we're going to have to do the Vorwerk's as she got spooked by the other chickens and flew up onto the run roof She was m.m.'s away from flying down into next doors garden. Am also not sure if it will make any difference as she's so small and light anyway. How on earth can we do it when she's sooooooooooooo timid and runs away if you so even as look at her. How on earth we forgot to ask the breeder to do it is beyond me Should we try getting her out of their temporary home tonight?
Ain't Nobody Here
Could you get her out of bed so she's very drowsy? I'm no expert, never having done it .
Egluntyne
That would be my suggestion. One hold and the other snip. She won't flap away into the night. Use a strong pair of scissors, not a tiny pair of embroiidery ones. The feathers make a very satisfying crunch when you cut them.
Barkisland
The only time I can touch my legbar is when she is half asleep - had to do a night time swoop to spray her bum with GV when she was being henpecked - so I'd say that would be the time to do it. There are some videos on you tube that show you how to do it- I'm sure someone posted the link on here recently. It's a 2 person job, one to hold and the other to cut. Good luck with it, I haven't dared try yet either (and my 2 ex batts need their toe nails clipping, which I am terrified to do - think I will whizz them down to the vets for a tutorial, once they have settled in properly). Cooks
I ahve never done it, but I will have to assess the new two when they arrive. These two are flappy, but dont take off (large bottoms holding them down if you ask me!)
Madbird
We were nervous the first time we had to do it... but once you do the first one your confidence increases! Has anyone shown you where to cut or a picture demonstrating? It's real easy to see where you have to cut in 'real life'.. but kind of difficult to explain

Vicky40
I know how you feel as I was anxious about wing clipping but once we started I found it quite easy and strangely satisfying. We waited till the girls were in bed as they are far easier to handle when sleepy. We lifted them out one at a time and took them indoors to clip their wings, so if they did get away it wasnt a major problem. You do have to hoover up afterwards mind you as the bits of feather go everywhere. As suggested I'd get someone else to hold the hen and then gently pull out one wing. We followed the omlet step by step advice guide, it was really simple to use. You can always clip off a bit more as you get braver. Good luck! Lewis
I found it easier to hold the hen upside down, and clip the wings so you can see the part that touches the body? (It makes sense in my head )
Lewis
And there's this:http://uk.youtube.com/watch?v=kLaGpczNhEI I really like this Giving It A Go series. I might video me clipping the Quail's wings - I know its not a chicken but for all intents and purposes it's the same process. (And their wings need doing )
