CrazyDaizy
Hello folks, I have surfed this site to try and find an answer to this problem. We only had Snowflake in September so she's not very old. For the last couple of days she has been quiet, showing little interest and standing about the garden fluffed up. This morning she cant even stand up, legs splayed out in front of her. I have put her quietly in the garage on a bed of straw away from the other chickens. Given her some water and some food, but I am afraid she is slowly dying. I would rather she went this way, than be examined by a vet and die of shock that way. I havent a clue what is wrong with her, she is only young!! Now I need to disinfect the eglu etc and keep an eye on the other two chickens. Arent these birds a worry! Plum
Sorry she's poorly. Guess its your choice not to go to a vet but I've not heard of a chicken dying of fright at vets. I hope she goes in peace. If you post her symptoms perhaps Claret or Egluntine can help with some advice on home treatments? If you have a look on the main omlet site it says how to do a chicken health check. Good luck.

We took a Chicken(Daisy) to the Vets last year and the trauma of being examined killed her. It was devestating and I dont want to go through that again. If someone could just quietly come into our garage where she is right now, and say what is wrong with her without handling her, then that would be fine. I will post the symptoms and look up the chicken health check as you say. Thank you again
CrazyDaizy
Here's her symptoms.... Cannot stand.... legs splayed out in front of her quite stiffly! She is eating a tiny bit if I put food in front of her, and she is drinking if water is offered. Keeps closing eyes like she is going to sleep, then wakes suddenly and tries to move. No discharge from anywhere. She's only about 7-8 months old.
Plum
Am sure they'll be along soon. How upsetting.
abwsco
Is she laying and if so when did she last lay. She could have an egg on the way which has trapped some nerves. We had an exbatt who couldn't stand up, one leg was stuck out frontwards. We took her to the vet, were given metacam and she spent 13 days living in the house with us. She then went back to the flock and apart from a limp now and again she was fine. Only you can decide if you want to go to the vets though. Egluntyne
I think it would be a good idea for you take her to the vet. If she is still eating and drinking, then she still has some spark in her. I'd bring her indoors and place her on a comfortably warm hot water bottle and keep her hydrated. It could be any one of a number of things that ail her, and she may respond well to treatment. The vet would advise whether it would be kinder to have her PTS if the outlook is not good. Thanx Egluntine She's in garage with a hot water bottle right now but obviously wanting to move about and cant with the way her legs are. Lets hope its a "stuck" egg trapped on a nerve or something. I dont know if Vets are open on Sundays! I will check. I will keep you posted
CrazyDaizy
I have moved her to the conservatory with the heater on in there. Her comb is still very red and her eyes seem bright and she is eating + drinking!! Its just that she cant stand up! Will keep you all posted. Ain't Nobody Here
Sorry to hear about your poorly girl . I hope she perks up or, if you decide to take her to the vet, they can diagnose and treat her .
Christian
Sorry to hear that she is poorly CrazyDaisy. If you can, feel under her tunny to see if she is swollen. Any white pasty droppings at all? Or wet knicker feathers? If she does have an egg stuck, the droppings get stuck and sometimes the white 'urine' part manages to escape. A hot water bottle is good and will relax her, maybe enough to pass the egg with time. Make sure it doesn't cool down too much as she will appreciate the heat if she is poorly. The main thing is to get water into her so she doesn't dehydrate. Adding a small amount of honey is good as it gives her glucose too. Hope she is better soon. Thank you Christian Apart from not being able to stand up, she seems fine, eating and drinking whatever we offer her. The only concern is..... she hasnt pooped all morning + I cant see any "urine" at all. I am not sure what to look for regarding swollen! Any vets I have phoned have provided numbers for emergencies only, which this isnt really. So I will hang on for 24 hours and see how she is tomorrow. sandyhas3chucks
I don't know if this is helpful, but 3 weeks after we got our ex bats one came out of the run, limping. OH rang to ask if I knew & if she had hurt it. She was drinking like loads out of the pond then sitting with her head under her wing. She got up and could barely walk but made it into the Egllu from the garden. A few hours later she emerged walking just fine but oh so thirsty. It was light till ( so I took her indoore & keot letting her drink, by the norning though shr was beither eating or drinking and was one poorly girl. By the afternoon I took her to the only vet I could find, & she said she had Egg Peritonitis, where part was stuck. The poohs were unbelievably foul,in look & smell. A AB injection, Metacam & food fluid & she perked up 3/4 hour later by the time we were home. She did check inside & there was nothing to be felt. Since then lots of softees never lame but heard ait can trap a nerve. Here's hoping it IS just an egg on the way. If she stops eating & drinking & looking really sick, get to any vet you can. It can often take mine a real long time to get a softee out & up to 12 or so hours after for a gooey shell & a happy chicken again. Check her crop is empty in the morning. (nothing to do with softees that tip! good luck
CrazyDaizy
Update Still no change, she is feeding and drinking fine, but no poops or any sign of "leaking" from the back passage. Poor thing must have one helluva tummy ache Im hoping that as soon as she can pass something, whether its an egg or poop, then she will be fine again! My concern is.... do I have to get up every so many hours in the night to give her water?
sandyhas3chucks
i didn't and i don't suppose she will drink anyway, personally as she is in the house I would let her stay up & watch tv till late as you think she is perky, then leave her in peace & quiet. & hope for something in the morning then maybe go to the vet. But that is justmy opinion, as she is eating & drinking. I do hope it is nothing else. keep us posted.
CrazyDaizy
We have put her in the pet carrier with a hot water bottle and she is in our utility room for the night. I have been surfing the internet trying to find out what the problem..... .....No droppings ALL day. .....No eggs .....And cant stand up with legs right out in front of her! Marek's disease shows legs similar to hers, but in that case one it out front and the other behind... Snowflakes are both out in front! Will have to see what morning brings, and take her to the Vets
Ain't Nobody Here
I'm sure that's the right thing to do. I hope the vet can help her . Let us know, won't you?

CrazyDaizy
No change this morning, though she does look weaker. Not surprisingly I cant believe she still hasnt pooped or even laid an egg. Poor girl. She's having water and a bit of food. As soon as I can I am taking her to the vets this morning! Will keep you posted. Thank you everyone for your continued support.

sandyhas3chucks
If you are anything like me you will feel soo much better for seeing the vet, esp if she is weeker. My girl still not showing any sign of improvement. Vet hoped over weeend she would, I hoped overnight her crop would reduce with the treatment, and all the water she drank yesterday. How about an apt with vet for this afternoon, if she passes something you can cancel. though if she is weeker???? hmmmmmmm? I have found that so many symptoms manifest in similar ways, It is worrying me daft!
Egluntyne
I would still take her, as she has been unable to stand for 24 hours.
Groovychook
Only just caught up with this... Hope you can get her to the vet...
CrazyDaizy
She is improving! Had another poop from her!! She is doing ok so we have decided no vets at the moment! She even sitting properly, rather than with her legs splayed out in front. Will keep you posted, not out of the woods yet! Thanx a lot for everyones support and help
