redbug
Want a pear tree.....but nectarine and peach.....they must grow is this climate? Thanks for letting us know Poet.
Guest
no worries. I'm getting the 2 cherry trees and if the peach/nectarine are bred for this climate I'll grab one of those too
kayandrob
Thanks, I will have to go and have a look, fingers crossed they have some in our Aldi. Get ready for stupid question: Can these trees go straight outside or do I need to keep them indoors for a bit? we don't have greenhouse or shed at the mo, got a garage but its quite dark in there. Sorry I'm sure question seems a bit silly but I am a first timer on the gardening side! Thanks xxxx
Redwing
They should be fine to go outside, perhaps it may be a good idea to keep them near a house wall so they are sheltered until you are ready to plant them out
Janty
Thanks for that Poet. we need more fruit trees for when the run gets built and we finally sort the garden out.
redbug
Happen to go into aldi today. and they had cleared a big space for the fruit trees. The girl reckons they will be very popular and sell out quick so she told me to come in as early as possible.....
Guest
got 4 trees today conference pear, morello cherry, hedeflingen cherry and nectarine. They had loads of apple varieties, plums, peaches, nectarines, pears and cherries. I could have gone mad but we've only got so much space! I also got one of the cold frames on offer, some propogation trays and some of the 38p seeds; perpetual spinach, autumn king carrots and scarlet emperor runner beans. Oh, if anyone is crafty, they had a super looking etching/engraving tool for about £10 with quite a few attachments/heads so if you wanted to do some glass engraving or something, you could. I paid about £20 for mine ages ago.
Janty
We've just been...got 4 victoria plums, 1 opal plum, 1 conference pear, 1 peach and 1 comice pear. Hubby is just soaking them and preparing the ground now. Thanks Poet. Edited February 19, 2009 by Guest
moochoo
I've just been and bought an Opal plum. I liked the idea of the apple trees but they were not self pollinating and I've only got room for 1.
Karen & co.
Mark nipped in this morning for me and got a plum, cherry and a pear Can't wait to get them planted. Karen x

Chickens@61
having seen the tip off on here, i have been to the aldi near the hospital where i work and purchased: 2 bramley, 1 cox & a morello cherry tree fingers crossed we all bear lots of fruit
Guest
exciting isn't it! our Aldi still had some of the fruit canes left over from last week, slightly reduced in price. Am tempted to buy a pack for the lottie If they're still there next time I go, I'll get one....or two
Chicken Licken
Popped in today and got spinach beet seeds (the girls love it), naturtium seeds, seed compost lots of different propogators and little pots for potting on seedlings and all for £10 - could easily have spent twice that in a garden centre - now I have itchy fingers to start growing things - maybe broadbeans - they can go in early..... henny penny
Very silly question here but are these trees large ones or dwarfing stock. As i would like some for my garden but its not massive. Could they be trained to be espaliers or cordons?
Guest
they've been grafted so assume they must be dwarfs?
Janty
They vary in size but each variety states what size they can be expected to grow to. Victoria Plum - 12 - 25 ft Opal plum - 12 - 25 ft Helderfinger cherry - 12 - 35 ft The others are soaking in the polytunnel and it's too dark to look now. I will have a look tomorrow. Guest
blimey, that tall! I didn't read the labels, just grabbed what I fancied. If you prune them though you can keep them small can't you? DH planted our nectarine and pear down at the lottie today. Someone said to him that trees aren't allowed if anyone complains we might have to move them to our garden, a nuisance but not the end of the world. Charlottechicken
Thanks for this, I happened to be near an Aldi this morning (I never usually go anywhere which has an Aldi ) remembered this thread and popped in. Came home on the train with a Morello cherry tree (and a couple of blueberry plants from Homebase )
Guest
just told OH we're going to homebase, he did this
Charlottechicken
They had loganberries in Homebase too which looked to have really dark fruit, according to the picture on the box, I couldn't buy another as I already have one and it is a really heavy cropper.
