jackiepoppies
Rogue traders... BBC 1 now! Horrendous!
chelsea
Yes it was Jackie.. Dont know how they can get away with it. How that chap in Wales that sold the 2 dogs with parvo and then the RSPCA "couldnt find anything" amazed me proof again that the RSPCA are useless (IMO). A chickychickychick-ENN!!
God, the RSPCA. I once had a stray left on my doorstep and was on the phone to them on hold for five hours. They never answered. I will NEVER give them another penny.
SarahJo
Not anything new - but good to bring to the forefront again. My 2 dogs - both from SPCA and RSPCA - fully vaccinated and excellent pets from age of 12 weeks. The thing that makes me cross - is that for all faults/failings of charity groups - there are so many people on low incomes ( or NO income ) turning up at the school gates with these "Pedigree" pups. Makes me wonder :- a) How they get the cash to buy such a pup b) How they can then afford to keep/vaccinate/ etc a Pup c) Where they house the fully grown dog ? (bigger breeds of course) d) Why they did not rehome a dumped dog, from all the ones being turfed out by owners no longer able to afford to keep a dog? Responsibiltiy and accountability surely begins with the 1st choice of such dogs - they are not fashion accesories, and Paris Hilton was recently blamed for such a crime . Sorry - rant over - just have very mixed opinions on such things - certain people want a cheap pedigree pup, and do not even do the homework on hip scores, eye tests etc, which are often inherent in "pure breeding and in-breeding" in species. Janty
That's because a lot of these people show as much responsibility towards their dogs as they do towards their hoards of unruly children. Neither are disciplined and when the children get too much for them then it's everybody else's fault or they must have ADHD and when the dogs get too hard to handle or become ill, they often just dump them. Before anybody gets upset at the ADHD comment, I have a son with ADHD who lacks attention, gets fidgety, etc but is NOT naughty (well only like a normal child would be). It really does annoy me when a parent excuses a child's poor behaviour because of ADHD. It stands for attention deficit and hyperactivity disorder - not throwing chairs, kicking parents and being unreasonably badly behaved disorder. Shirl
I didn't see Rogue Traders but I went to the park today and met a woman with a 9 week old Jack Russell. It can't have had it jabs and it looked nothing like a JR. Apparently she paid £300 for it and she wants to breed from it (it was male). I was flabberghasted. I pointed out how expensive breeding puppies is if you do it properly and how much it costs me each time I choose to breed. I hope, but doubt, it might all sink in. Aww Janty, your son is lovely - such a helpful lad Unbeknown to us (at the time) we had a puppy from a puppy farm when I was a child, he was riddled with tumours and died at 9 months old
Rhapsody
My American Bulldog from Battersea Dog's Home was bought off the internet unseen by his original owners so 90% sure he was from a puppy farm. Whatever else these places are doing they are not breeding healthy dogs- he is allergic to wheat, beef, grass, tree pollen, and eggs. He has two arthritic knees (he's 2!) and we've already forked out 4 figures to fix one of his legs. Caveat Emptor!
Janty
Aww Janty, your son is lovely - such a helpful lad Thanks. That's why I get annoyed when people use ADHD as an excuse for naughty behaviour. Baden has ADHD and Aspergers ( a type of autism) and we expect good behaviour and polite manners from him as we would any other child. Janepie33
Petsville - the pet shop featured - is just down the road from me and they have loads of puppies and kittens squeezed into little cages at the back of the shop and they advertise hundreds of different breeds that they can get for you. I have met a couple of people who have bought puppies from there and the puppies have had serious medical problems. There have been campaigns for years amoungst the locals to get the place closed down and the shop has had numerous visits from the RSPCA. The problem is, there is not enough evidence that would stand up in court to do anything about it. We can all see the evidence for our own eyes and now on brilliant Rogue Traders, but the law seems to be on their side. I was soooooo cross when my next door neighbours bought a kitten from Petsville (I begged them not to, but it was 'easier' to go to a pet shop rather than the rescue route). The kitten is a bit odd, but no medical problems thank goodness. We got one of our kittens from an RSPCA rescue place and I have nothing but praise for the RSPCA. Guest
I've just never understood why people buy cats and dogs from pet shops. To me cats come from the rescue place or someone you know having kittens and dogs come from breeders. It simply wouldn't occur to me to start looking in pet shops for anything other than rodenty things or fish.
