AJuff
I've just got back from visiting my sister in Northamptonshire and whilst I was there I had hen envy! Her two chooks, a goldline and a black rock look beatifully feathered and very happy in their enormous open run. And they produce huge eggs too!!! I thought of my chooks, two with bare bottoms, and of their run size and space. . . . .and of their egg size. . . Does the size of their run affect egg size? Does their access to grass/mud affect egg size? So after much pondering about the chooks and their space OH and I have decided to open up the whole side of the garden and give it to the chooks!!!! OH has been out buying fence posts to secure the end of the garden. In addition they will keep their walk in run and loose their cube run. I will have the area under the slabs/cube and run to turn into a new raised bed right next to the greenhouse. This way the chooks are off the main garden (no poo!!) Away from the new raised beds (yippee!) and OH will never need to mow the grass down the side of the garden as the chooks may turn it into mud in a few weeks!!!!! C&T
Now that is a plan! Win win all round! Can't answer your questions I'm afraid, but with so much effort, I hope your chickens lay a few double yokers at least to say thank you! ruth1
Im sure egg size is dictated by the breed of hen, but like many animals good food and living space is bound to have some sort of effect . Your plans sound great, lucky girls
Ain't Nobody Here
Sounds like a good plan to me . I don't think run size can affect egg size - two of mine consistently lay 68-74g eggs and the other 60-66g. As long as they're not cramped and are able to do chickeny stuff I'm sure they just lay the eggs they're designed to!
