Soft egg

Recommended Posts

I thought I'd report this as just after it had happened, an Omleteer friend phoned me about her hen with exactly the same thing, and it might help others to hear about it....

The other day, I found Jude (the Ancona) standing in the nest box, looking miserable and with a puddle of damp in the Aubiose beneath her. Looking at her bottie, I could see that she had a shell-less egg on the way and was trying to pass the empty membrane. When this happens, their oviduct produces lots of extra lubes to help them pass it, hence the wet mess.

I gently pulled the membrane out of her, working with the contractions and she was hopping around happy as anything 5 mins later. I put more limestone flour in their feed.

We had a proper egg from her today :D

Claret thanks Sams laying as been a bit off too.

She has been missing days and yesterday she laid a soft egg.

She has not laid today so I am going to worm her as its been about 4 months since I had her.

I think limestone flour would be a be a good ideas also - where can you get it online?

Try worming her and also popping a little tonic like Lifeguard in their water, that may help.

How old is she? As hens get older, their shell gland gets a bit knackered with all the laying and they start to lay softies. I had a similar question from someone who had an ex-batt and she'd had her for 18 months. The lady had tried all the usual supplements including Davinova in the water, but it wasn't doing any good; she had two options, to leave the hen to carry on laying softies (which obviously bothered the hen) or to have her PTS.

I buy the NAF equestrian Limestone Flour, their products are very good and I also give my girls a teaspoon or so of their seaweed in their feed.

Jude has returned to laying proper eggs now, so it was just a blip.

I put the equivalent of around a heaped teaspoonful in to a grub full of pellets.

I also add a dollop of cod liver oil to the pellets too, as it contains Vit D3 which is needed for calcium metabolism.

Sam is still very young not even a year old so I have ordered from Hyperdrug

60g Flubenvet

4kgs Limestone flour

1 litre codliver oil

Total inculding vat and postage it is £27.00 - everywhere I looked for 240gs of Flubenvet didn't have limestone flour and the cost of postage from two sites would have been higher. Nightmare

Hoping for delivery urgently as Sam has not laid today let.
