Help does anyone have any good ideas,on how to stop nesting material fall out through slot in the bottom of the eglu cube nesting box? Would it be ok to line it with newspaper?

At the moment we're just using some sellotape but it's not a permanent solution

Newspaper would be fine but I bet your girls scrabble it all out of the nestbox while they're getting comfy for laying .

 

I know some people use lino but Claret's thing looks .

I put a strip of parcel tape.

 

It works well.

I'm using a piece of that shelf liner from Ikea - it works very well!

I use shredded newspaper as bedding and it rarely falls through the hole in the first place. I'm glad because i'd rather keep the hole to help ventilate the nestbox.

I found a perfect plastic liner...in the form of a cat litter tray!

 

It's even lilac and matches the cube!

 

I will measure it for those who are interested, cost me a couple of quid from my C&C.

 

As you look in the nest box there is a ridge? Well the rim of the cat litter tray rests on the ridge so the tray doesn't actually sit on the bottom, so still allowing ventilation.

 

This also lifts the area up slightly. It does make the area available for nesting smaller, but if your girls are anything like mine then they only seem to lay on one side anyway!

 

I place the tray in the middle and I guess the gap either side is about 5cm or so.

 

Seems to work so well. All I have to do is lift out the litter tray and empty.

 

I'm cooking on calor!

thanks for all suggestions. have cut up a plastic lid and put bolts through as suggested and it works quite well. Amber does seem to enjoy moving it out of the way but I will let her off as she has started laying Think she was only trying to get comfy

You've got me thinking about the eglu nestbox now . I think I'll try and find a round washing up bowl - it would be great to be able to remove the contents without needing gloves/scoops etc .

I sent an idea to Omlet over a year ago, (no response ) for a removable double bowl/half football joined to a 'wall' between to divide the nesting box into two laying areas.

 

Tried to add a sketch but don't know how

 

I wish Omlet were be better at replying to suggestions emails.
