Cate in NZ
Is it a repeat from last year? I remember watching an episode about Rotorua in January or February last year, and boy did they bang on about the smell . Hopefully they'll show how pretty and green Rotorua is, with some brilliant outside spaces within a very few kms of the City centre. I simply love it here . (Oh, and for those that are worried about the smell, there are a few smelly hotspots that's for sure, Kirirau Park, Sulphur Point and, oddly enough, right outside the AA & the Christian bookshop on Eruera street.....anywhere else it's rarely noticeable ). Just as an aside hubby yesterday celebrated his first anniversary of living in NZ.......and has said that he can't ever imagine returning to the UK now on a permanent basis, he feels so settled and happy here. I've now lived here 8 months, and feel much the same way .

jackiepoppies
Hi Cate, Just wanted to say I am so pleased you and the family are happy with your move to NZ. It's not easy leaving everyone behind but you all seem to have really got it right Jx
Seagazer
I haven't watched it yet, got it on sky+ but remember watching it last year and they did go on about the smell a lot. I shall watch it again especially now I 'know' someone who lives there. I'm so glad you and your husband feel so settled. Do the kids feel the same way? Often on these wanted down under programmes its the kids that have the most trouble settling. I watched one the other week, a revisited one, and the mum and daughters had gone to New Zealand but the older girl dropped the bombshell that she was going back to England to be with her boyfriend. The poor Dad looked like he didn't know whether to go to New Zealand or stay in England. It was a shame because the mum and younger daughter were really happy there. Oh, , was that, by any chance Maddie the midwife who went to Christchurch? I "knew" her on one of the expat forums that I visit, and her eldest daughter did have some problems settling, largely down to missing her boyfriend from what I remember. She's not been around on the forum for a while now, but I put that down to moving on and getting on with life, but maybe they've been in a dilemma . Tough one. I do know of family's who've toughed it out, let the youngsters return to England, work out their relationships...then return to NZ if/when it all went pear shaped, but I'm not sure that I could ever do that personally...I read sme of those accounts with my jaw dropping . But I'm so incredibly lucky that Seb & Immy both love it here, made friends, happy at school and loving the outdoorsy lifestyle. Also, fortunately, neither of them were in romantic relationships when we left....I think that girl/boyfriends make it so much more difficult for teenagers to leave. They're playing so many new sports, they do loads of wake boarding and water skiing at the lakes, we have beaches not too far away, Immy's really got into mountain biking and kayak polo (oh, and Salsa dancing now, but she could have done that easily in the UK). They've both said that they want to go back to the UK for holidays to catch up with friends, but that they're too happy here to want to live permanently in the UK again. Of course things change, I don't pretend to know what the future will hold for us or them, and I think that if either of them chose to return to the UK on a permanent basis I would find that very difficult and would probably follow them back. But if one chose to stay and one to go....I don't know...it's the risk you take with a huge adventure like this. But, for now, life's good, for all of us

Seagazer
Its fantastic to know that you have all settled down. It was the lady that was a midwife, really short hair. I hope it worked out for her as she seemed so happy there. I watched the rest of the Rotorua episode and I think I know where the Aussies get the term whinging poms from Mind you they said they wanted to emigrate at the end of the programme so would be interesting to know if they made it in the end.
