Lesley-Jean
I’m really quite excited I studied physiology, pharmacology, microbiology and chemistry at college and have worked for many years in scientific research and later in school science and for the last 10 years in IT support, I have decided to widen my knowledge and have registered for an OU introduction course in humanities It contains subjects which I have always found interesting like art history, literature, music, philosophy, classical studies, history, religious studies and history of science and technology. The course in purely on line and should take about 16 hours a week. Can I manage a few more hours on the computer …Ermmmmm ................ Yeh ............... Will my poor old brain cope with new subjects and “thinking” again (my last formal qualifications were taken in 1975) ................... I do hope so Have any of you taken up a subject far removed from your chosen study and career area, I’d be very interested to know

Last year I decided to take a diploma in psychology and this May got my first certificate to hang on the wall since 1980, it feels quite good actually
Guest
Wow! Good for you Lesley-Jean. I think a friend of mine might be doing that course. She has completed the first year and says she is now a CertHum. She certainly seems to have covered all those areas you mentioned. Now she's starting the second year and although she has told me what it will involve, I can't remember now! You must keep us posted with what you're doing and how you're getting on. What was that then Laura, your 11-plus? I'm sure it couldn't have been O or A-levels! You just don't look old enough!

(but don't overdo it - extra strain at your age can be dangerous... ) I'm just about to start a level 4 GNVQ in Parenting/Child Development I'm quite excited about it - I haven't sat an exam or written coursework for about 15 years now... I left it all behind confidently declaring that I never wanted to sit another exam in my life.. but now - it all seems quite exciting - the prospect of learning something new. I often wonder if we do school at the wrong end of our lives... we should do it when we're older and more keen to learn... (perhaps!) Phil PS - doing some background reading about teenagers, parenting and sex-education, I came across this rather badly-worded sentence today... "Talk about sex in everyday situations, doing the washing up, washing the car..." I don't know about anyone else - but doing it whilst washing the car seems a bit public to me... maybe I'm a bit prudish!!

debbie
Hi L-J How exciting!!!! I took the OU Humanties course around 6-7 years ago. Really interesting and I learn't an alwful lot too. Found out that I was passionate about art. I always have painted on and off over the years, mainly in water colour and a lttle in oil, but it brought the subject alive and its brilliant to understand paintings, sculpture etc. I found myself at all types of art Galleries. So after the Humanities couse I signed up for the Art and its History course. Sadly I haven't done anymore since, not enough time. You may discover a new passion, who knows!!!!! Guest
Well done LJ Now that sounds like my idea of a course. I work for a university so doing a course would be no problem, the problem is time, I also don't really want to the qualification at the end, I would just like to take the lessons and not the exams We do some great modules here but I don't want to be tied to anything specific We have just had a student graduate from here and he was 89, so I have a few years to think about it

Cinnamon
I have been meaning to take some sort of further education, but I just cannot decide what to do We have a great college here in Henley - maybe I should start small & do a beginners French course to brush up on my school girl French The downside of that is then The Hubby would see that there is really no excuse for not moving to France Good luck with yours, LJ
Karen & co.
I had a guitar for Christmas and then started lessons at night school last year, but changes in the way adult ed means that they may not be able to continue I would like to do an academic course this time though, as I've recently done reflexology, Indian head massage, and aromatherapy, just can't think what karen x

Lesley-Jean
Go for it Sarah. I wish my French was better Karen just think of something you are interested in and perhaps not done before that's the one to do I just thought of you Buffie with your course on 'Life Coaching' and thought "what would a life coach say to me", "Challenge yourself" was the answer. Mel (& Paul)
any life coach I would have would say "put that chocolate down NOW" Last year I did a two day course in animal massage - great fun - and it even relaxes the Minkster
Cate in NZ
Well done L-J. Exciting to have a new challenge to look forward too and I bet it'll be interesting. I keep being pushed, and pushing myself to develop new skills. Last year I did basic courses in plumbing and bricklaying.... only for domestic use, I'm not a qualified plumber, I hasten to add, but they were fun and I've now built a small wall in the back garden (and a much bigger one planned ) and have changed the kitchen tap and taken radiators on and off the wall. Simple jobs really, but satisfying to know that I can do them without having to call in a tradesman. Next I have to do a work related one, nurse prescribing I'm dreading it because it's going to be tough, and have recently postponed it from a Sept start to March because I've got too much going on at home to give it a fair crack at the moment. Lesley-Jean
I just got 87% (Pass 1) in my first tutor marked assessment covering painting, poetry, music and philosophy. Thanks for the help with the music Ginette It was very interesting, learnt such a lot in 4 weeks, it's opening a new world for me
