poachedegg
I was in Wilko's today to buy some rhubarb ( after Poets and OH's visit the other day!) and decided to buy a bag of red onions, however not really sure what to do with them. Come on wise ones - share your knowledge and enlighten me please!
Redwing
They can go in the ground now, the closer you plant them the smaller they will grow but 2-4 inches between bulbs at at least 6 inches between rows is a guide The top should show above the soil but birds like to pull them out of the ground (just put them back in if that happens) I am starting mine in modules so they get roots before being planted so they aren't as easy for the bird to pull out
poachedegg
Could I plant them in pots? I have very limited space. And when are they ready?
Redwing
Not 100% sure, I think its AUg/Sept time You can plant them in pots but dont plant too close to the sides to give them room to grow
TAJ
Onions sets like compacted soil - so press it down hard before planting - usually we cover with chicken wire for the first few weeks until they get established, otherwise birds can pick them up and move them for you!
