fluffyknickers
Was in Marriages store today and asked if they have Diatom or similar and got talking and the man there said thay have just got in some tobacco stalks as these are supposed to deter mites/lice! They werent expensive (couple of quid I think) so bought a bag to try. Anyone else heard of this? I am going to put a couple in the run and in the cube. He said they were suitable for all animals as were simply tobacco plant stalks. x

Egluntyne
Just googled and it seems that they are mainstream in the Pigeon world. Tobacco Stalks The Natural Tobacco Stalks are a particularly suitable nesting material, pigeons like to use to build their nest. The nesting plays an important part in the relationship between the male and the female on the one hand, and in the attachment of a couple to their nest on the other hand. It is evident that suitable nesting material enhances the breeding results. Moreover the Natural Tobacco Stalks are a natural and efficient means to protect the breeding pairs and their youngsters against external parasites (red mite, feather mite and ticks). Old Speckled Hen
Yes I've seen these. I think I might put some out for the wild birds. When we clean out the nest boxes in the autumn they always have grotty parasites in them. Last summer we watched the last batch of sparrows scratch and scratch in their nest box.
